Christian Streich’s SC Freiburg stayed top of the Bundesliga 2 table after a hard-fought 2-1 win away at 1. FC Heidenheim.
The visitors, level on points with RB Leipzig before the game, fell behind early on when Heidenheim’s cult hero Marc Schnatterer picked up possession and drove into the box, before curling an accurate shot past the sprawling Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow.
Freiburg have the lead’s leading scorer in Nils Petersen, however, and the southwest club’s talisman had them level before the break when he found the corner from the penalty spot following a foul on Nicolas Höfler. The game became stretched in the second half as both sides went for the winner, but Freiburg seemed to manage the game better and as the home side tired, Karim Guede stabbed home the winner in injury time.
