After parting ways with Gino Lettieri, MSV Duisburg have acted promptly by hiring former Bulgarian midfielder Ilia Gruev as their new head coach.

The 46-year-old has signed a contract until 2017 with the clear remit of guiding the Zebras off the bottom of the Bundesliga 2 standings. Duisburg currently prop up the table and sit three points adrift of 17th-placed TSV 1860 Munich, having picked up just a single win from their opening 13 matches.

“My thanks go to those in charge of the club for the faith they’re putting in me,” said Gruev, who made 80 appearances for Duisburg between 2000 and 2004. “I’m delighted to take charge of such a special club. MSV are among the most iconic clubs in German football and I'll be doing everything in my power to ensure that we remain in Bundesliga 2.” Gruev's first game is at home to SC Freiburg on Saturday.
