Paderborn - Stefan Effenberg has been appointed head coach at Bundesliga 2 side SC Paderborn 07.

The Bundesliga legend, who represented Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg over the course of a long and storied career, has been handed a contract until 30 June 2017.

'A top place to work'

"For some time I've been thinking of taking a job as a head coach," said Effenberg to the club's official website. "To that end, Paderborn is a top place to work, as shown by the impressive career paths of my predecessors. SCP have a squad full of quality and so we need to form a successful side as quickly as possible."

Three of the Bundesliga's best-known coaches have have been in charge at the Benteler Arena within the last decade: Gladbach's Andre Schubert, FC Schalke 04's Andre Breitenreiter and Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Roger Schmidt.

The East Westphalians, who were relegated from the top flight last season, currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga 2, a place above the relegation zone. Markus Gellhaus was relieved of his duties as head coach a week ago after a 1-0 defeat at MSV Duisburg on Matchday 10, a seventh loss of the season.
