Fortuna Düsseldorf maintained their Bundesliga 2 status for another year after recording a 2-0 victory away to Eintracht Braunschweig on the final day of the season.
Düsseldorf were 15th going into the game and needed to draw to be absolutely sure of survival. Coach Friedhelm Funkel's charges rose to the occasion, with their tactical discipline and willingness to battle hard in midfield helping them weather an early onslaught from the hosts.
The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Fortuna took a surprise lead through a moment of individual brilliance from Kerem Demirbay, who skipped past a number of defenders to break the deadlock in the 74th minute. The attacker sealed the victory moments later, converting coolly from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Jan Hochscheidt, and sparking scenes of celebration at the final whistle.
