RB Leipzig earned promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time ever after beating Karlsruher SC 2-0 at home on Sunday.
Eager to put the seal on a maiden promotion to Germany's top flight, the hosts enjoyed the better possession in the first half but struggled to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances before the interval. Defender Marcel Halstenberg went closest to breaking the deadlock with a rasping shot from the edge of the box that flew just wide.
Leipzig's pressure eventually took its toll early in the second half, however, when Swedish striker Emil Forsberg finished a right-wing cross from close range. Aware that a Karlsruhe equaliser could spoil their party, Leipzig pushed for a second goal but it was not until late on that they earned some breathing space thanks to a Rene Vollath own goal. The victory was fully deserved for the home side, who subsequently celebrated a highly successful season.
