FC St. Pauli missed the chance to close the gap on third-place 1. FC Nürnberg as they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The hosts, who went into the game a solitary point ahead of the Bundesliga 2 relegation play-off position, took the lead after just five minutes when Kerem Demirbay finished off a superb flowing move involving Axel Bellinghausen and Joel Pohjanpalo.
Düsseldorf deservedly led at the break, but USA’s Fabrice-Jean Picault netted his fourth goal of the season on 71 minutes to rescue a point for Pauli, who could slip nine points behind the promotion play-off spot if Nürnberg beat 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday. Fortuna, meanwhile, climb above FSV Frankfurt 1899 into 14th.
