Freiburg raced in front with Marc-Oliver Kempf on hand to turn the ball in after Robin Himmelmann only parried Pascal Stenzel's effort. Vincenzo Grifo then put the hosts in control of the proceedings with a direct free-kick ten minutes before the interval.

A Nils Petersen own goal gave Pauli a lifeline ten minutes into the second half, but that was snatched from them within five minutes when Maximilian Philipp restored Freiburg's two-goal advantage. Enis Alushi reduced the arrears once again heading into the final quarter of an hour, but Kempf added his second and Freiburg's fourth before Lasse Sobiech completed the scoring from the penalty spot.
