SC Freiburg returned to the top of the Bundesliga 2 table for the first time since Matchday 17 after beating regional rivals Karlsruher SC 1-0 on Monday evening.
Goals: 1-0 Frantz (58')
Following RB Leipzig's defeat to 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday, Freiburg went into this match aware that victory would take them to the summit, but the sense of occasion seemed to inhibit them initially and Karlsruhe were much the better side in the first half. The visitors had several chances to score, and even had a goal disallowed for offside, before the interval brought the hosts some much-needed respite.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich must have held a fearsome half-time team-talk, as his charges emerged for the second period intent on asserting themselves. They attacked relentlessly and created chances seemingly at will before Mike Frantz headed in a Vincenzo Grifo corner to break the deadlock. The home side subsequently eased off but continued to control the encounter against a Karlsruhe outfit that had Dominic Peitz sent off late on for a second bookable offence.
