Relegation-threatened Fortuna Düsseldorf secured a dramatic victory in their first game under new coach Friedhelm Funkel.
Düsseldorf started on the front foot, taking the lead through a Charalampos Mavrias header after just 30 seconds. Their success was short-lived as Marcel Gaus headed the visitors level minutes later. An error-prone Düsseldorf side began to lose control after Alexander Madlung nearly gifted Kaiserslautern the lead in the 12th-minute. The home side rallied, though, and regained the lead through Oliver Fink on 39 minutes, before some chaotic Kaiserslautern defending handed them a third just before half-time.
Fortuna decided to sit back and defend their lead after the break, and were brutally punished for the tactical change. Two goals in six minutes - including a Madlung own-goal - saw Kaiserslautern draw level again, before Kerem Demirbay restored Düsseldorf's lead on 69 minutes. The home side held on to secure their first home win since December, and win some invaluable breathing space in the relegation dogfight.
