1. FC Union Berlin midfielder Benjamin Köhler has made his first competitive appearance since winning his battle with cancer.

The 35-year-old received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Alte Försterei stadium in Berlin when brought on as a 77th-minute substitute in his side's 3-1 home win over Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday.

Köhler, who previously played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Eintracht Frankfurt, among others, was diagnosed with lymph node cancer in January 2015 and has been working his way back to full fitness following a successful course of treatment.

After the final whistle his team-mates hoisted him aloft in celebration of his return to competitive action with the first team.

"We welcome Benny Köhler to the field!"
