Bundesliga 2 strugglers Fortuna Düsseldorf have appointed Friedhelm Funkel as the club's new head coach.

Funkel, 62, who has previously coached at Hertha Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Bochum 1848 and most recently TSV 1860 Munich, has been handed a contract until the end of the season at Die Flingeraner after Marco Kurz was relieved of his duties on Sunday.

"Friedhelm Funkel will bring some fresh momentum in the battle against the drop," said Düsseldorf sporting director Rachid Azouzzi. "Hardly any other coach would bring the experience that we so desperately need in our current situation."

Funkel's predecessor Kurz took over from Peter Hermann in January, but the team accumulated just four points in his seven games in charge and currently occupy the relegation play-off place.

Düsseldorf, who competed in the Bundesliga in 2012/13, are next in action at home to 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Matchday 27.
