SC Freiburg threw the Bundesliga 2 title race wide open once more with a 2-1 victory at home to leaders RB Leipzig on Monday evening.
Goals: 1-0 Grifo (10'), 1-1 Kaiser (56'), 2-1 Niederlechner (68')
Heavy snowfall turned the pitch white at Freiburg's Schwarzwald-Stadion, but the division's top two sides coped admirably with the conditions and delivered a spectacle worthy of its billing. The hosts went ahead early on when Vicenzo Grifo skilfully slotted home following good work from Florian Niederlechner and Mike Frantz.
Yet Leipzig are a difficult side to keep down, and they duly levelled early in the second half. Anticipating Yousuff Poulsen's cross from the right, Nils Quaschner's dummy blindsided the Freiburg defence and set up captain Dominik Kaiser to clinically fire home the equaliser. A gripping finale ensued and although both clubs sought the knockout blow, it was Freiburg who landed it, substitute Nils Petersen feeding Niederlechner to score the winner and pull the hosts within three points of their title rivals.
