1. FC Union Berlin survived the loss of a man in the second half to secure an impressive 2-1 victory over Karlsruher SC in the capital.

After a scrappy start to the game characterised by some sloppy passing from both sides, Karlsruhe opened the scoring when Hiroki Yamada finished at the back post from the game’s first attacking move of note. The hosts hit back in some style, however, as SV Werder Bremen loanee Felix Kroos found the top corner with an unstoppable drive that kissed the post on its way in.

The Berliners were dealt a blow when midfielder Damir Kreilach was sent off for a second booking on 47 minutes, but they made light of their numerical disadvantage as USA international Bobby Wood put them in front with a deflected strike on the hour. Karlsruhe lacked ideas as they went in search of an equaliser, as the home rearguard, marshalled well by the veteran Emanuel Pogatetz, preserved the points with minimal fuss.
