RB Leipzig continued their push for promotion to the Bundesliga with a hard-earned 1-0 win at SC Paderborn 07 on Matchday 23.
Ralf Rangnick’s men boasted a six-point lead at the top of the table going into the game, but they were matched in every department by Stefan Effenberg’s tenacious Paderborn side, with the hosts' Nicklas Helenius going closest to a first-half goal with an effort that went just wide.
With neither side creating too many chances, a set piece eventually broke the deadlock, as Leipzig defender Marvin Compper wrestled himself free in the box to power in a header from Dominik Kaiser. Helenius was then denied by a brilliant save by Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi as the home side rallied, but the Saxon outfit held firm. Rangnick’s charges were able to see out the points and move nine clear at the top of the table, although second-placed SC Freiburg can cut the gap when they host 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
