The reverse fixture was a goalless draw, and it appeared all the drama had been stored up for the second half on Sunday. After a high-tempo opening to the game, both sides settled down and cancelled each other out, leaving the 0-0 half-time scoreline a fair reflection.

Things then burst into life early in the second half with two goals in as many minutes. Marc Schnatterer put the hosts in front (48') before Christoph Hemlein equalised straight after (49'). Schnatterer (55') put Heidenheim in front from the penalty spot after Hemlein had fouled Robert Leipertz, who added a third for his side (62') only moments after Bielefeld wasted a chance to equalise.

A red card for Tom Schütz (64') did not help Bielefeld's cause but Julian Börner (80') made things interesting as he reduced the arrears, but it was too little too late for the East Westphalians.
