Fortuna Düsseldorf pulled six points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at high-flying SC Freiburg.

SC Freiburg 1-2 Fortuna Düsseldorf

Having dominated possession for most of the opening half-hour, Marko Kurz’s side broke the deadlock when Nikola Djurdjic tapped home his first goal since his winter signing from FC Augsburg 26 minutes in.

Freiburg - who began the day in second, 18 points better off than their visitors - got back on level terms on the stroke of half-time when Vincenzo Grifo sent Michael Rensing the wrong way from the penalty spot, sealing his second goal in as many games against Düsseldorf.

Kurz endured a disappointing debut last week with his side falling 1-0 to FC Heidenheim, but his first win as Flingeraner coach was assured here when Sercan Sararer’s deflected shot span past Alexander Schwolow in the home goal after 69 minutes. Fortuna then sat deep for the remaining 20 minutes to close out the victory that lifts them up to 14th. Freiburg remain the best of the rest, though they are six points off RB Leipzig’s pace.
