Fortuna Düsseldorf edged away from the relegation zone courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Eintracht Braunschweig on Monday night, the final game of the Hinrunde in Bundesliga 2.
Under the interim coach Peter Hermann, Düsseldorf began positively, looking to build on victory over FSV Frankfurt last time out. Joel Pohjanpalo came close as his side dominated the opening stages and the Finnish striker gave Fortuna the goal their start deserved when he lashed home from 20 yards out.
Braunschweig responded well, however, taking control after the hosts' opener and continuing in a positive vein into the second period. Their hopes of finding an equaliser were boosted when Düsseldorf's experienced centre-half Karim Haggui was dismissed in the 56th minute, but despite efforts from Hendrick Zuck and Salim Khelifi in the closing stages, Hermann's troops held on to rise to 13th, while Braunschweig slip to sixth.
