Struggling Fortuna Düsseldorf earned three invaluable points in the battle against relegation after recording a maiden away victory this season with a 2-1 triumph against FSV Frankfurt.
Following a hard-fought opening phase, Düsseldorf took the lead when Kerem Demirbay scored from the penalty spot on 23 minutes. The hosts subsequently took the initiative in an effort to draw level, but after missing a number of decent opportunities it was Fortuna who scored again, with Demirbay notching his second with a clinical finish from 12 yards out.
The visitors were the better team after the break but failed to get another goal their performance deserved. Instead, FSV pulled a goal back against the run of play when Lukas Gugganig scored from an excellent direct free-kick. Frankfurt struggled to build on that against a strong away side, though. Indeed, the only negative for the guests was Demirbay’s sending off for a second bookable offence in the closing stages, but they were able to hold on and secure a much-needed win.
