VfL Bochum’s gradual slide down the Bundesliga 2 table continued on Friday evening as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Union Berlin.
The result marked a fifth consecutive game without victory for Gertjan Verbeek’s men, who have tailed off after a strong start to the season. Still, they began well here and did not take long to go in front, with Peniel Mlapa scoring a spectacular solo goal in the 14th minute following a run from the halfway line.
However, Bochum subsequently sat back and allowed their visitors into the game and Union equalised shortly afterwards when Damir Kreilach took advantage of a defensive lapse to prod in from close range. The second half was poor in comparison to the first, with few chances and little goalmouth action to punctuate a hard-fought affair. Given the overall balance of play the result was a fair one, but neither side will be satisfied with a point.
