Nils Petersen scored his second hat-trick of the campaign as SC Freiburg returned to the top of the Bundesliga 2 table with a 4-1 victory over ten-man SC Paderborn.
The Black Forest club flew out of the traps and went ahead after just three minutes when Petersen slotted home Mike Frantz’s low cross. The same two players combined again less than 20 minutes later - Petersen directing a powerful header past Lukas Kruse from Frantz's cross. Paderborn captain Marvin Bakalorz was dismissed for a second bookable offence, before a trademark Vincenzo Grifo free-kick made it 3-0 before the interval.
Petersen completed his hat-trick seven minutes into the second half after good work from Marc Torrejon, before Khaled Narey netted a consolation for Stefan Effenberg’s side in stoppage time. The East Westphalians remain perilously close to the Bundesliga 2 relegation zone, while Christian Streich’s charges return to the top of the standings.
