Düsseldorf - Fortuna Düsseldorf earned three precious points after edging a 1-0 victory over DSC Arminia Bielefeld on Friday.
After going four games without a win, the home side started somewhat anxiously, but their nerves were settled by a fortuitous opening goal midway through the first half. After a kind ricochet, Sercan Sararer seized on to the ball and powered into the box, fizzing in a cross that struck the inside leg of goalkeeper Wolfgang Hesl and flew into the back of the net.
Bielefeld coach Norbert Meier had previously been in charge of Fortuna and taken them from the third tier all to the Bundesliga in 2012, but he was done no favours by his former charges. Instead, Düsseldorf’s players defended manfully for large parts of the second half to secure only their second win all season and deal Arminia a first away loss.
