1. FC Union Berlin midfielder Benjamin Köhler made an emotional comeback after being diagnosed with cancer just under a year ago.
The 35-year-old returned to action in a 4-0 friendly win over a Spanish Footballers Association XI in Oliva Nova on Sunday, and even converted a spot-kick for the Bundesliga 2 side.
“I’m very happy [to be back],” said Köhler. “It was a very emotional. In a way it was fitting to be awarded a penalty. The boys made me take it. For me it was important to be back on the pitch with my team-mates. I’m just over the moon.”
The former Eintracht Frankfurt, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Hertha Berlin player signed a one-year contract extension after he was diagnosed Hodgkin's lymphoma of the stomach in early 2015.
"It's a massive blow for my family and I," Köhler said at the time. "First I've got to process it, but then I'm going to fight it with everything I've got. We'll be seeing each other again for sure."
