Heidenheim - FC Erzgebirge Aue were relegated to the third tier after failing to secure the victory they needed to survive away to FC Heidenheim, drawing 2-2 after fighting back from two goals down.

Heidenheim were safely nestled in mid-table prior to kick-off, unable to win promotion and long since safe from relegation, and as such there was a distinct lack of urgency in their play. The same could not be said of Aue, however, who were desperate for victory to climb out of the drop zone and were therefore made more of the running. The east German outfit were unable to make the most of their dominance, though, with Stefan Mugosa heading their best chance of the first half over the bar.

They would come to rue that miss after the break when Heidenheim centre-back Kevin Kraus was afforded plenty space to head in a corner from the left. Worse was to come for the visitors when Robert Leipertz wriggled free inside the box and slotted past goalkeeper Martin Männel, leaving Aue needing three goals to survive. They did stage a remarkable comeback, with Patrick Schönfeld on target from the penalty spot and Männel sensationally scoring a header from a corner, but it was too little too late for the Violas.
