Darmstadt - SV Darmstadt 98 secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 33 years after beating St. Pauli 1-0, completing an extraordinary rise under coach Dirk Schuster after playing third division football just last season.

This was a huge fixture for both sides, with the hosts determined to win in order to book their place in the top flight and St. Pauli equally keen for the points to stave off relegation. However, thanks to vociferous home support it was Darmstadt that enjoyed the better of the first period, albeit without seriously threatening to go in front against a compact visiting backline.

With the match finely poised, it was eventually decided by a moment of genius from Tobias Kempe, whose direct free-kick from almost 30 yards out flew into the bottom corner. St. Pauli roused themselves and searched for an equaliser as the game wore on, but their failure to level matters was ultimately of little consequence as results elsewhere went their way, meaning the Hamburg outfit will remain in Bundesliga 2 next term.
