Aue - 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s promotion hopes suffered a setback as they were held to a goalless draw at FC Erzgebirge Aue, who remain deep in relegation trouble going into the final day of the season.

After a cagey opening to the match, the contest sprang into life after 32 minutes when Chris Löwe’s free-kick was punched straight into the path of Willi Orban, but the Red Devils’ defender could only find the side-netting from a tight angle. Visiting keeper Tobias Sippel then had to be at full stretch to keep out Rico Benatelli’s powerful effort as the hosts finished the half the stronger.

Both sides continued to create chances after the restart with Simon Zoller going close to giving Kaiserslautern the lead on 69 minutes, before Sippel again came to the visitors’ rescue late on by saving a low shot from Bobby Wood. Neither side could fashion a breakthrough, however, leaving Lautern in fourth place on account of their inferior goal difference to third-placed SV Darmstadt. Aue, meanwhile, go into the final day of the campaign in 17th and a point off guaranteed safety.
