Karlsruhe - SV Darmstadt 98 moved into the automatic promotion places in Bundesliga 2 with a narrow 1-0 victory at Karlsruher SC, whose own hopes of reaching the top flight were dented by the defeat.

Daniel Gordon went close to putting Karlsruhe ahead after just five minutes with a header that cannoned back off the frame of the Darmstadt goal, but neither side managed to register a shot on target in a tense first half at the Wildparkstadion.

The hosts continued to apply pressure after the break, but Markus Kauczinski’s side were hit by a devastating counter-attack after 66 minutes, Tobias Kempe sidefooting the ball home after a blistering run from Marcel Heller. KSC threw men forward in the closing stages, but failed to fashion an equaliser and slip four points behind the top two, while Darmstadt climb above 1. FC Kaiserslautern into second place.
