Darmstadt - Ten-man Heidenheim battled for a point at promotion-seeking Darmstadt on Sunday, denting their hosts' aspirations with a 1-1 draw.

Darmstadt had an opportunity to put the pressure on 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the race for the second automatic promotion berth from Bundesliga 2 with a home win, but they were kept in check for the first 45 minutes by Heidenheim, with a Marcel Heller cross which struck the top of the crossbar the closest either team came to scoring.

The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot in the 64th minute with Dominik Stroh-Engel converting after Aytac Sulu was fouled by Sebastian Griesbeck. It looked like it would be an easy win for Darmstadt when Philip Heise was shown a second yellow card soon after, but Heidenheim showed unity and resolve to level 13 minutes from time through Florian Niederlechner, denying Darmstadt all three points and denting their promotion challenge.
