Nürnberg - Gertjan Verbeek enjoyed a happy return to his former club as his VfL Bochum side ground out a somewhat fortunate 2-1 success at 1. FC Nürnberg.

The Franconians raced out of the blocks and tested Bochum goalkeeper Michael Esser three times in the opening five minutes, with Jakub Sylvestr coming closest to an opener. Bochum were off the pace for the opening stages, but they improved as the first half wore on and went into the break ahead thanks to Marco Terrazzino’s emphatic volleyed finish.

Nürnberg struggled to reproduce the quick start they had enjoyed in the second period, and Simon Terodde scored what proved to be the decisive goal with a neat finish through the keeper’s legs. Peniel Mlapa pulled one back for the hosts, for whom Even Hovland also struck the crossbar with a header late on, but despite laying siege to the away goal, they were unable to salvage something from the game.
