Nuremberg - 1. FC Nürnberg’s promotion hopes suffered a blow on Friday evening as Rene Weiler’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat to 1. FC Heidenheim at the Grundig Stadion.

Mathias Wittek headed Marc Schnatterer’s right-wing free-kick past Patrick Rakovsky to give the visitors the lead against the run of play after 28 minutes, and although Nürnberg did their best to muster a response before the interval, they were too often let down by their final ball. The Franconians continued to dominated proceedings after the restart and should have restored parity with 16 minutes remaining when Danny Blum’s cross found Guido Burgstaller inside the six-yard box, but the Austrian failed to get his shot away in time and although the resulting loose ball landed at the feet of Jakub Sylvestre, the former Erzebirge Aue man was unable to direct his effort on target.

The result leaves Nürnberg seven points off third place, while Heidenheim climb up to ninth ahead of the remaining Matchday 24 encounters.
