Two goals inside the space of six first-half minutes put the hosts seemingly comfortably in charge early on. Mario Vrancic bagged the first in the 14th minute, drilling home from outside the box following a short free-kick. Not long after that, a fine interchange between Deniz Naki, Jens Wemmer and Diego Demme was rounded off by Philipp Hofmann's far-post tap-in to make it 2-0.
Paderborn looked closer to a third goal than the visitors did to pulling one back as the game unfolded, but 20 minutes into the second half Marcel Reichwein handed them a lifeline, slotting away a penalty he had earned himself following a foul by Vrancic. The striker then headed in Marco Calamita's cross with a minute remaining to rescue a point for the Baden-Württemberg side, who are now officially safe from the drop.
Paderborn, who had Deniz Naki sent off before the final whistle to round off a disappointing afternoon, are now without a win in five and could theoretically still go down via the relegation play-off.
