  • Mexico face Uruguay in opening Copa America game on Sunday.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen star 'Chicharito’ came off the bench to score the only goal of the game as Mexico defeated Arturo Vidal’s Chile in a heavyweight pre-Copa America Centenario friendly on Wednesday.

On his 28th birthday, the Leverkusen forward watched the first 78 minutes of El Tri’s encounter with the reigning Copa America champions from the bench, but emerged onto the pitch in San Diego to score the winner four minutes from time and move onto 44 international goals, just two shy of Jared Borgetti’s Mexican record.

The win - the seventh in as many games under coach Juan Carlos Osorio - gives Chicharito and Co. the ideal end to preparations for their opening group game against Uruguay on 5 June. They will also face Jamaica (9 June) and Venezuela (13 June) in the group stage.

Chicharito’s Leverkusen team-mate Charles Aranguiz featured in the opposition’s starting line-up alongside FC Bayern München’s Vidal with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim’s Eduardo Vargas coming off the bench in the second half.
