Jadon Sancho was the Revierderby hero as the English teenager scored the winner for Borussia Dortmund to seal their first win over Schalke for three years.

Schalke 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Goals: 0-1 Delaney (7’), 1-1 Caligiuri (pen. 61’), 1-2 Sancho (74’)

It was always going to be an intense match, but the first half was a truly breathless period of football, and it was Schalke who were left gasping for air early on. Marco Reus’ free-kick was curled into the box and met by Thomas Delaney, who headed past Ralf Fährmann at the near post for his first Dortmund goal. No better occasion for him to get it. Chances came for both sides before the break, as Dortmund looked to utilise the counter, while Schalke were building their moves forward from the back. Domenico Tedesco’s side were left with a makeshift attack after Guido Burgstaller was forced off with a knock, being replaced by Hamza Mendyl. That meant that Mendyl and Weston McKennie were leading the line into the second half.

It was a slow start to the second half, but as with all derbies, it didn’t take long to catch fire once again. Reus’ challenge on Amine Harit was initially waved off by referee Daniel Siebert, but a check with Video Assist had the decision reversed, and Daniel Caligiuri made the most of the chance from the spot, sending Roman Bürki the wrong way. But it was far from the last of the drama, as Sancho continued to create history for Dortmund. The England international was played in on goal by Raphael Guerreiro, and he made no mistake from a tight angle, putting the ball past Fährmann into the far bottom corner. In his Revierderby debut, the 18-year-old provided the touch of class needed for Lucien Favre’s side to seal all three points and consolidate their lead at the summit.

Match stats

  • Sancho scored his sixth goal of the season for Dortmund, and first ever against Schalke.
  • Reus has nine goals and six assists in the Bundesliga this season. Only Eintracht Frankfurt's Sebastien Haller has been involved in more goals.
  • Dortmund will claim the nominal Herbstmeisterschaft (autumn championship), if Borussia Mönchengladbach lose on Sunday.
  • When Dortmund last won the title in 2011/12, they had 26 points after 14 matches. They currently have 36.
