Football fans around the world can relive the highs and lows of Borussia Dortmund’s rollercoaster ride in 2018/19 by tuning into a new behind-the-scenes documentary series.

Runners-up Dortmund pushed Bayern Munich all the way in the Bundesliga as well as reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and an intimate four-part show is set to offer a unique perspective on their season.

Award-winning director Aljoscha Pause has been behind the production of the documentary, which will be available in over 200 countries via Amazon Prime Video on August 16.

Pause, who released a film on Dortmund attacker Mario Götze last year, was given unprecedented access to the dressing room, training centre and the players’ private lives.

A dramatic 2018/19 campaign will provide the main focus, with skipper Marco Reus, midfielder Axel Witsel, head coach Lucien Favre, sporting director Michael Zorc and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke all featured. The documentary will also reflect on some of Dortmund’s biggest past successes and defeats, however, and will include contributions from former coaches Jürgen Klopp and Ottmar Hitzfeld and 1997 European Cup-winning captain Matthias Sammer.

“Aljoscha Pause has once again demonstrated his incredible filmmaking talent and has succeeded not only in discreetly producing a fascinating insight into the everyday goings on at a football club, but also in showing BVB how it really is,” Dortmund managing director Carsten Cramer said.

“Authentic in its raw emotions, sometimes over the moon with joy, sometimes bitterly disappointed, but always ready to bounce back from one moment to the next.”

The documentary should offer incredible never-before-seen footage from the title race, which saw Dortmund battling with Bayern before ultimately finishing two points adrift in their bid to be crowned German champions for the first time since 2012.

“I know I speak on behalf of my teammates when I say that it was exciting to be observed over a long-term period like this,” Reus said.

“Aljoscha Pause and his team very quickly felt like part of our squad as we celebrated victories and processed defeats together. Although ultimately we just missed out on our dream of winning the German championship, I’m still very much looking forward to the finished documentary.”

Pause’s work will air shortly before the start of the 2019/20 campaign, when Dortmund – already bolstered by the signings of Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt, Nico Schulz and Thorgan Hazard – will once again try to end Bayern’s seven-year dominance.
