Full time: Wolfsburg 2-2 Hoffenheim

A hugely significant result for Hoffenheim, who are not yet guaranteed top-flight survival but cannot now suffer automatic relegation. Christian Ilzer’s side are now six points ahead of Heidenheim, who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot with two games left to play, but Hoffenheim’s goal difference is far better (a nine-goal swing). Realistically it’s unlikely that Heidenheim can catch Hoffenheim, even if it’s still mathematically possible. If Heidenheim don’t win at Union Berlin on Saturday, Hoffenheim are safe.

Hoffenheim should be home and dry

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Not only have the visitors had more shots on goal (14 to 11), the quality of their chances has been much higher. They should be leading, according to the expected goals (xG) metric.

Over from Tabaković!

The chances are coming in quick succession now for Hoffenheim as Tabaković has a free header at the near post. He connects well with a cross from the right but can only get under it and the ball goes way off target.

Bülter fires over!

Wolfsburg can't deal with a cross from the right and the loose ball falls kindly for Bülter, right on the edge of the six-yard box. He snatches at it though and sends his powerful drive well over the bar.

Vavro to the rescue!

Stach twists and turns as he enters the Wolfsburg box, trying to fashion space for a shot. He does so and fires an effort at goal but Vavro throws himself at it and deflects the ball out for a corner this his thigh. Brilliant defending.

Hložek lively

The 22-year-old has had two shots on goal so far in this match. Only teammate Toure has more with three.

Superb from Hložek

Cutting in from the left-hand side, the young forward hits a powerful strike at goal that stings the palms of Grabara before it's hooked clear.

Positive from Skov Olsen

The winger drives forward down the right, shifts his weight and shimmies past his marker. His cross isn't quite of the same quality, however, and it sails harmlessly wide.

Half-time: Wolfsburg 1-1 Hoffenheim

he home side raced out of the blocks and took the lead after just 18 seconds when Amoura’s shot was deflected in by Østigård. The Wolves were rather toothless going forward after that though, and as Hoffenheim grew into the game they equalised thanks to Kadeřábek's sublime back-post volley.

Goal disallowed

Bischof fizzes a free-kick from the left towards the near post. Kramarić controls it with a magnetic first touch before flicking it past Grabara with the outside of his right boot and into the net. It's an exquisite finish but it won't count because he was offside.

Kadeřábek on fire

That's the wing-back's second goal this season, both of which have come in the last three games. He opened his account for 2024/25 in the 3-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 31.

The equaliser!

Bülter chases a loose ball to the byline down the left and lifts his cross high towards the back post. Kadeřábek is completely unmarked and hits a fine volley into the net from 15 yards, leaving Grabara no chance.

Great strike!

Wimmer brings down Hložek just outside the Wolfsburg penalty area, right of centre. It's a hugely inviting position, with both Kramarić and Bischof standing over it. The latter takes it, curling a powerful effort past the wall and towards goal but Grabara paws it away.

Final ball lacking

Both teams are getting forward well and finding some promising positions, as with Hložek just now, but that final quality ball is missing.

Brilliant from Hložek

Kramarić releases Hložek down the left and the forward does brilliantly to dance in to the box, evade a challenge and cross into the middle for the onrushing Toure. Grabara reads his intentions though, and leaps off his line to snuff out the danger

Unwanted record

Hoffenheim have now conceded 11 times in the opening 15 minutes of their games this season, which is more than any other top-flight side apart from Holstein Kiel (also 11). However, they have cause for optimism too, as they have picked up at least one point from losing positions a league-high eight times in 2024/25.
11'

What a save!

Toure is given plenty of time to line up a shot from the edge of the penalty area. It takes a deflection off a defender's leg and spins up, arcing towards the top corner - until Grabara flings himself at it to poke the ball wide for a corner.
9'

Trying to settle

The visitors are stroking the ball around among themselves in their own half in a bid to regain their composure after that early setback.
5'

Record goal

The goal was officially clocked at just 18 seconds, making it the second-fastest goal in the Bundesliga in 2024/25 and the fastest ever for Wolfsburg. The quickest was scored by Jamal Musiala after just 15 seconds in Bayern Munich's 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel on Matchday 3.
2'

Wolfsburg lead!

Bülter wants too long on the ball and is robbed of possession by Wimmer, who slides a pass into the path of Amoura in the right-hand side of the penalty area. He shoots from a tight angle and it goes in off a deflection from Østigård with just around 20 seconds on the clock!

All eyes on the new man

Having been Wolfsburg's U19 coach up until this point, Daniel Bauer is now the man in the first-team hotseat until the end of 2024/25. Each of the club's last eight head coaches have earned at least a point from their debut games - will Bauer build on that trend?

More on that Wolfsburg team

Interim coach Daniel Bauer has made four changes to the Wolfsburg side following their defeat in Dortmund last week that signalled the end of Ralph Hasenhüttl's spell in charge. Gerhardt comes into central midfield for Dardai, Kamiński replaces Skov Olsen on the right wing, and Wind and Amoura begin up top in place of Nmecha and Tomás.

Today's venue

Will Hoffenheim have clear skies above them come the final whistle as they bid to secure their Bundesliga survival for another year?

More on that Hoffenheim team

Christian Ilzer has made two changes to the team that earned a point from a rip-roaring 4-4 draw in Gladbach last week. Baumann returns in goal, with Luca Philipp dropping to the bench, while Akpoguma comes into the defence for Nsoki, who is nursing an ankle injury.

Wolfsburg interim coach Daniel Bauer's thoughts

"It’s about football, and that has been my great passion for many years. And it’s a lot of fun to be able to prove myself at this level and support the club. We’re looking forward to tomorrow."
camera-photo

Christian Ilzer on Wolfsburg

"Wolfsburg will be focused and well set-up. They have a high level of individual quality. We have to be wary of that. We still have two matches remaining to achieve our minimum objective of staying in the league. We have taken a few steps forward since my appointment, but I'm also not satisfied about the fact that we haven't managed it sooner. We don't want to prolong our season and want to finish off the job in Wolfsburg."

A different Wolfsburg?

Following the sacking of Ralph Hasenhüttl, Wolfsburg may play with a freedom that hasn't been seen for a while. After eight games without a win, it will be interesting to see how they react to the change.

Unwanted record

Their 1-0 loss earlier in the season wasn't the only time that Hoffenheim have fallen to Wolfsburg this season, as they were also on the wrong end of a 3-0 DFB Cup defeat in December. They have lost three of their last five meetings with the Wolves, with their sole win within those five coming at the PreZero last season, where they won 3-1.

Survival up for grabs

Hoffenheim can all but seal Bundesliga survival with a point against Wolfsburg. They're currently five points clear of 16th-placed Heidenheim and nine goals better off, with just two matches remaining. They can also seal survival no matter their own result, providing Heidenheim lose at Union Berlin.

Home disadvantage?

Should Wolfsburg fail to win against Hoffenheim, they'll end the season with 15 points from their home fixtures – their worst home record in the Bundesliga to date. Their previous lowest home tally was 17, in the 2002/03 and 2017/18 seasons.
