Full-time: Stuttgart 4-0 Augsburg

Stuttgart's run of home defeats is finally at an end as they thrash 10-man Augsburg at home. The visitors were left with a mountain to climb with Essende's early sending-off, but the hosts made sure to not grow complacent, taking their chances confidently when they fell. Four goals bodes very well for their upcoming DFB Cup final against Bielefeld, but they'll hope the injuries to Stiller and Keitel are nothing too serious.

Demirović gets up to meet a cross with a header at the far post again for Stuttgart, but this time, his effort is just wide of the mark.

Demirović gets in on the act!

The former Augsburg captain adds a Stuttgart fourth. After Dahmen got down really well at his near post to deny a low effort from Führich, the winger takes the resultant corner. He plays a one-two short before whipping in a right-footed cross into the middle, where Demirović rises highest to nod it home.

Demirović down

The striker is the latest Stuttgart player to be down receiving treatment, after hitting his head on the turf when he fell under the challenge of Giannoulis. However, he looks determined to continue.
84'

Nearly a fourth

The ball falls for Mittelstädt on the edge of the Augsburg box and the No. 7 immediately looks to shoot. Going for precision over power, he attempts to curl one into the top left corner, but it flies narrowly over the bar.
81'

Millot makes it three!

And that's game. Following a frantic scramble in the Augsburg box which saw Demirović blast an effort at Dahmen from close range before hitting the rebound onto the crossbar, a failed Augsburg clearance is poorly controlled by Tietz. The loose ball is seized upon by Millot, who picks his spot in the bottom left corner and dispatches it excellently.

Squandered!

What a chance to make it three. Stuttgart launch a rapid counter-attack and Woltemade tees up Undav on the edge of the box. The ball just takes a bobble before he strikes it and the German international sends the ball ballooning over the bar.
78'

Looping header

Millot plays a whipped cross into the box from the left, finding Vagnoman in the middle. The substitute rises relatively unchallenged, attempting to steer it goalwards, but he misses the target.
76'

Changes aplenty

Hoeneß opts for a double change, bringing on Vagnoman and former Augsburg captain Demirović on for Stenzel and Leweling. Thorup also opts to swap Tietz in for Claude-Maurice.
74'

Cheeky from Undav

The striker is played through to the byline on the left and tries to dink a cross into the box, though, whether he meant it or not, it's on target and forces Dahmen to scramble back to tip it over the bar.

Führich spots Stenzel on the edge of the box and lays it off to him. The full-back takes it first time, hitting an accurate shot towards the bottom left corner. Dahmen tips it round the post and concedes a corner, which Stenzel takes. There's appeals for a handball from some Stuttgart players but that's been checked and cleared by the VAR.

Stuttgart combine excellently down the left flank. Führich cuts in off the left flank, creating space for Mittelstädt to overlap. The left-back fizzes a low cross in towards the front post where Leweling tries to flick it past the keeper, but Dahmen makes himself big to make the save.

Long throw-in

Undav launches it into the box from high up on the right flank. Chabot wins the first header, but Augsburg manage to clear.

Woltemade doubles Stuttgart's advantage!

A very well-worked goal from the hosts. Undav plays it into Woltemade's feet on the edge of the box. The striker, who has his back to goal, plays a quick one-two with Millot before opening up his body and smashing it home into the far corner with his right boot. 2-0!

Half-time: Stuttgart 1-0 Augsburg

Stuttgart go in at the break deservedly ahead. Captain Karazor reacted quickest to score a rebound from a corner inside 10 minutes to give his side an early lead. Injuries to Stiller and Keitel and Essende's sending-off halted the build-up of momentum over the course of the half, but Stuttgart got into their stride in the final 15 minutes, regularly testing Dahmen. Augsburg have struggled since going down to 10 men, but have still created a few chances, particularly down the left through Giannoulis.

Took too long

Claude-Maurice leads a promising-looking counter charge for Augsburg. He has runners either side but doesn't release the ball. Eventually, he chops back onto his right foot and plays a cross into the box, but there are no takers in the middle and it goes behind for a goal-kick.
40'

Side netting

Augsburg are starting to fashion a couple of chances here. Giannoulis plays a teasing low cross in front of the face of the Stuttgart box. Claude-Maurice gets onto at the far post, but his effort sends the ball flying into the side netting.
39'

In by Kömür

The youngster floats a good ball into the Stuttgart box from a free-kick on the right flank. Zesiger gets to it first, but is always leaning back and sends the header looping over the bar.
37'

Führich tees up Millot

The Frenchman immediately looks to fashion a chance after coming on. Führich cuts in off the left flank, laying it off to Millot at the edge of the box, who whips a low effort towards the bottom corner, but Dahmen gets down well to make the save.
36'

Woltemade gets up

Stuttgart's towering striker rose highest in the Augsburg penalty area to get on the end of a Mittelstädt cross. His header is on target, but it's too central, allowing Dahmen to make a good stop to tip it over the bar. Nothing comes of the subsequent corner though.
35'

Double change

Minutes after retaking the field, Keitel goes down again holding his leg. He is subsequently replaced by Millot. Somewhat surprisingly too, Jeltsch is replaced by Jaquez in what must be a tactical switch.
32'

Keitel returns to the field

There was a brief stoppage as Keitel stayed down after a challenge, seemingly with a dead leg. He has since, albeit gingerly, returned to the pitch.
31'

Gumny with the header

Augsburg make good headway down the left flank. Giannoulis crosses to Gumny at the far post, who gets up well to connect with the header, but just misses the target.

Some well-worked build-up play from Stuttgart culminates in a low cross from Stenzel finding the recently-introduced Keitel on the edge of the box. The substitute opts to hit it first time, but his effort is well over the bar.
17'

Stiller unable to continue

Following that challenge from Essende, Stiller has been deemed unable to see out the game and is replaced by Keitel. Stuttgart will be hoping it's nothing too serious ahead of the DFB Cup final against Arminia Bielefeld.
13'

Essende walks!

Following a VAR review, Essende is shown a red card for a challenge on Stiller. Initially given a yellow card, the referee was sent to the monitor for a second look, as the Augsburg man had caught Stiller very late with his studs up on Stiller's calf. Stiller had stayed down after the challenge and has now limped off the field for further treatment.

Stuttgart are dominating possession in the early stages here, but are picking their moments to create chances. Mittelstädt, the league's most prolific crosser has already put in several balls from the left, but so far there have been no takers.

The German international couldn't have come much closer. He brings a cross down in the middle expertly with his chest before striking it. His effort on the volley had Dahmen beaten, but ricochets back off the crossbar. So nearly the opener!

European qualification hopes fading

With RB Leipzig picking up a point against Werder Bremen, Stuttgart can no longer qualify for European competition next season via the Bundesliga. They do still have DFB Cup final against Arminia Bielefeld as a back-up means of qualifying, however. No matter the result here and elsewhere, Augsburg can no longer finish in the top six.

Stuttgart team news

Somewhat surprisingly, Sebastian Hoeneß names an unchanged line-up from his side's 1-0 defeat on the road against St. Pauli last time out.

Jess Thorup makes just one change to his starting XI that were defeated 3-1 at the hands of Kiel on Matchday 32. Gumny starts in the wing-back position in place of Wolf, who misses out today with an abdominal problem.

However

Stuttgart have lost their last six Bundesliga home games – never before in the Swabians' Bundesliga history have they suffered so many consecutive home defeats! This could be Augsburg's moment...

On a roll

In the Bundesliga, Stuttgart are unbeaten against Augsburg in six Bundesliga matches (five wins, one draw) – their longest ever run! Augsburg's last away win in Stuttgart came in November 2015 (4-0; goals: Esswein, own-goal Baumgartl, Callsen-Bracker, Koo).
camera-photo

Front men with form against Augsburg

Ermedin Demirović has not lost any of his six competitive matches against former club FCA (five wins, one draw), but has failed to score in any of them. Deniz Undav has won all four of his competitive matches against Augsburg, scoring the opening goal in three of them (including the last two 1-0 wins).
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on Augsburg

"We want to put in a very good performance and lay the foundations to finally end the run of home defeats. We want to get the maximum three points out of it and put ourselves in the best possible position for the DFB cup final by performing well. Augsburg have been playing a very strong second half of the season. The team are unpleasant to play against; they’re clinical and defend with clear ideas."

Permutations

Augsburg can no longer finish in the top six. Stuttgart's hopes, meanwhile, will be ended if RB Leipzig get a point against Werder Bremen, even if they win here. The Swabians, though, do at least have the DFB Cup final against Arminia Bielefeld to fall back on as a second chance.
camera-photo

Jess Thorup on Stuttgart

“We lost both meetings this year so now it’s time to shift the tide. If we perform well, then we are capable of earning something away from home and that is our aim. In order to pick up points in Stuttgart, we need to do the basics right. That doesn’t just apply to our defensive work but also in possession.”

Silver lining

While Stuttgart have fallen well short of last season's standards, they still have a DFB Cup final to looks forward to. They've also been easy eye once again this season, with Nick Woltemade, Angelo Stiller and Enzo Millot just a few of the names that have impressed for Hoeneß's side.

Positives

With two games to spare, Augsburg are four points ahead of their 2023/24 tally, and have conceded 15 fewer goals so far. While Europe is now out of reach, Jess Thorup's men were right amongst the conversation up until recently, and can be proud of their campaign.

Augsburg aiming high

A win in Stuttgart would take Augsburg's away points tally to 23 for the season, which would be a club record. However, they've taken just one point from their past three fixtures and have lost twice in a row for the first time in 2025.
camera-photo

Home disadvantage?

Sebastian Hoeneß's side have lost their last six straight home games in the Bundesliga. This season, they've actually collected more points on the road (24) than in their own backyard (20).
