Full-time: Bremen 0-0 Leipzig

Both sides will no doubt lament their missed chances as it finishes 0-0 at the Weserstadion, though 0-0's don't come much more exciting than this one. Finishing with an xG of 2.37, it's a wonder Burke, Schmid and Stage couldn't find the back of the net, but Péter Gulácsi was in inspired form on his return to the Leipzig line-up. Points shared means that Bremen can no longer qualify for European football this season, and for the first time in seven years, Leipzig cannot qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

End-to-end

The final minutes have been characterised with frantic end-to-end counterattcking, though neither side have managed to keep their composure in front of goal. Most recently, a Stage head on the end of a Schmid cross won a corner for Bremen, but nothing came of it.

Nusa curls one

The Norwegian does well to make space in a congested penalty area before aiming for the far post. It's too central though, and Zetterer can hold it.

Late changes

Both managers go the bench to make offensive substitutions as the game enters its final phase. Can the changes help their respective sides clinch the three points?

Substitution

79'

Stage with the chance!

Bremen have done everything but score this afternoon! This time, it drops to Stage in the Leipzig penalty area, who opts to go it alone, his powerful effort forcing a great save out of Péter Gulácsi. Ducksch was furious, however, as the German forward was unmarked in the middle...
78'

Pieper!

The centre-back heads on the end of Ducksch's free-kick, but it's just wide of the mark.
78'

Nedeljkovic booked

The Villa loanee picks up a yellow card for a rash challenge on Agu.
76'

Poulsen!

The substitute hits a powerful effort goalwards, but Zetterer is equal to it. There feels as if there's a goal in this game still.
75'

How has that stayed out?!

Following a Ducksch corner which was cleared by Leipzig, Bremen work it back out to their No. 7, who whips a venomous cross into the six-yard box. Friedl gets there ahead of everybody, his poked effort rattling the crossbar and bouncing out.
74'

More chances, still no breakthrough

Despite both sides pulling the trigger far more often in the second half, neither side have managed to break the deadlock as of yet.

Burke!

After a Xavi shot is parried by Zetterer, Bremen immediately look to counteratttack. Schmid slips Burke through into the right side of the Leipzig box, whose driven effort is palmed away by Gulácsi.

Double change

Poulsen and Nusa come in for Openda and Šeško after a quiet afternoon in front of goal for the Leipzig pair. Will the substitutes find a late winner for Die Roten Bullen?
68'

Crossbar!

Two quickfire chances for the visitors. First, Baumgartner is slipped through, but Zetterer comes off his line to close down the angle. Bremen clear, but only as far as Seiwald, who goes for it from distance, his effort ricocheting off the woodwork and behind for a goal-kick. The Austrian has never scored for Leipzig in the Bundesliga. That would've been some way to open his account...
67'

Fingertips!

A flicked Ducksch header on the end of a Weiser cross forces a fantastic save from Péter Gulácsi, who tips it behind for a corner at full stretch.

Xavi on the ball

Leipzig's No. 10 has looked the most likely to make something happen for the visitors.
64'

Vermeeren volleys again

On the end of another Xavi corner, the Belgian goes for a speculative effort on the volley, but again, it's well off target.
60'

Leipzig riposte

Openda then leads a counter charge from the visitors. He tries to slip Šeško through with an incisive pass, but it's intercepted.
58'

Burke leads the charge

The Scotsman instigates a fantastic counter-attack. Released down the right flank, he evades a challenge from Xavi before playing a one-two with Schmid and letting fly at the near post, which is tipped behind for a corner. Nothing comes of the first, but Burke wins another, which also comes to nothing.
55'

Xavi lets fly

Lukeba drives up the left flank for Leipzig before laying it off for Xavi. The Dutchman cuts in and curls an effort towards the far post, which is deflected behind for a corner. Xavi takes the set-piece too, but Bremen head it clear.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Ole Werner's men have flown out of the gates this second half and are unfortunate to not have taken the lead yet. Leipzig, as of yet, have not shown any increased attacking impetus.

Off the line!

Another massive moment early on. Burke bundles his way through the Leipzig backline, somehow managing to get a shot away, which Gulácsi can only half parry, as the momentum seems to have beaten the Hungarian, but Nedeljkovic comes in at the last minute to make a superb goal-line clearance!
48'

Agu again!

This time, the German pops up more centrally in the Leipzig box. He's found with a low cross from Weiser, but his shot is blocked.
47'

Agu!

A huge chance for Bremen early in the half. The wing-back is found in space inside the Leipzig box at the far post. He brings it down well, but his subsequent curling effort is lashed well over the bar.

Back underway!

Bremen get the ball rolling again for the second half here. There was a delay in restarting play as the assistant referee noticed a hole in the netting of the Leipzig goal that needed repairing.

Half-time: Bremen 0-0 Leipzig

An attritional half comes to an end. Bremen have been the more positive of the sides, dominating possession and enjoying both the better quality and quantity of the chances, with Ducksch and Burke looking lively. As has been the case for both sides, however, the execution of the final ball in the attacking third has been consistently lacking, which both managers will hope to remedy after the restart. Schmid was the closest to breaking the deadlock late on, only to be denied by the recently-returned Gulácsi.

Bremen want a penalty!

There's an extended stoppage after Burke wins a corner for the hosts, as, in the build-up, Ducksch went down under a challenge from Bitshiabu. After much deliberating, no penalty is given and Schmid is allowed to take the corner, however nothing comes of it.

Almost for Burke

The Scot is played through with a chipped pass, but Péter Gulácsi is very quick off his line to clear any danger for Leipzig.
41'

Great reverse pass

Up the other end, Xavi nearly slips Šeško clean through with a fantastic reverse pass, but Zetterer is alert to the danger and just manages to smother the ball.
38'

GOLDEN opportunity

How is it still level after that? Burke releases Schmid through in the middle of the park. The Austrian drives towards Gulácsi's goal and has a one-on-one with the Leipzig captain, but he opts to try and round him rather than taking a shot, allowing Gulácsi to dive on the ball before he can shoot.

Xavi's shot blocked

Šeško lays it off to his left, where Xavi takes a pop, but his curling effort is blocked well.

Chance squandered

Bremen work a really nice counter-attack in the middle of the park, but as has been the story of the first half so far, the final ball just lacks that bit of quality. Burke's cross to Ducksch is slightly overhit and the German forward can't quite manage to recover it before Leipzig get enough players back behind the ball.

Deep cross

Nedeljkovic drives up the right flank for Leipzig and plays a searching cross towards the back post for Openda. However, Stark gets up really well to make a vital intervention, heading it clear and preventing a golden chance for the Belgian.
22'

Another corner

Surprise, surprise; it's Ducksch again who takes it. This time, he plays it to the far post, finding Pieper, whose header is just over the bar.
19'

Driven in by Schmid

It's becoming quite end-to-end here. Openda led a rapid counter-attack but was let down by the final pass to Šeško before Werder looked to break themselves. Agu picks Schmid out with a good cross, who opts to take it on himself, lashing an effort just wide of the left post.

Werder corner

Ducksch takes an outswinger from the right, aiming for a teammate at the near post, but a Leipzig head is first to it.

Xavi takes...

13'

Friedl booked

The Werder skipper sees yellow for a late challenge on Xavi right on the edge of the box. The Dutchman was driving towards the Bremen goal with real intent could've fashioned a real chance.
10'

Miscontrolled

Openda activates a counter-attack with a superb flick round the corner to find Baumgartner in space. The Austrian drives forward before laying it off to Šeško, who gets the ball caught under his feet, taking all the danger out of the situation.
9'

Another Ducksch free-kick

Following a foul on Agu, the No. 7 takes the set-piece from the left touchline. He fizzes it in, but Leipzig head the first ball clear.
8'

Burke hobbles off

There's a brief stoppage as Burke stays down following a challenge, before hobbling off to receive treatment. It looked worrying, but he's back to his feet now and looks set to continue.
6'

Tenacious

Baumgartner is played through down the right flank with a lofted ball. The Austrian heads it into his path and manages to get to the loose ball first. He is tackled by a recovering Bremen defender, but battles well to retrieve the ball, though Leipzig can't quite fashion a chance after his good work.
4'

Ducksch!

Bremen have started really brightly here. Following a throw-in, Schmid finds himself in space on the edge of the box. His attempted shot is blocked at source, but it drops to Ducksch, who has a tight angle to get a shot away, but manages to blast an effort at the near post. Gulácsi is equal to it, however.
4'

In from Ducksch

The Bremen striker floats a good ball deep towards the byline. Stage tries to head it back across goal, but Leipzig get it clear.
2'

Early booking

Klostermann picks up a yellow card very early for a late challenge on Burke, which prevented a promising-looking counter-attack.

And we're off!

It's the visitors from Leipzig who get the ball rolling here at the Weserstadion.

More on those teams

Werder are showing an unchanged starting XI to the team that began last weekend's 2-2 draw against Union Berlin. That means a starting berth up front for Oliver Burke, who is playing his last home game before leaving the Green-Whites at the end of the season. Leipzig's Péter Gulácsi has recovered from concussion to take his place in a Die Roten Bullen side showing three more changes, with El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Christoph Baumgartner and David Raum also included.

Leipzig starting XI

Gulácsi (c) - Nedeljković, Klostermann, Bitshiabu, Castello - Baumgartner, Seiwald, Vermeeren, Xavi - Šeško, Openda

Leipzig subs

Vandevoordt, Geertruida, Norbye, Baku, Ouédraogo, Walther, Nusa, Poulsen, Gomis

Bremen starting XI

Zetterer - Stark, Friedl (c), Pieper - Weiser, Stage, Lynen, Schmid, Agu - Burke, Ducksch

Bremen subs

Backhaus, Jung, Köhn, Malatini, Bittencourt, Silva, Njinmah, Grüll, Topp

Permutations

Should Leipzig prevail at the Weserstadion, they will guarantee their place in European competition if Mainz fail to win at Bochum. Bremen, meanwhile, cannot afford to lose if they want to keep their own hopes of continental football alive, but even a draw might not be enough given their significantly inferior goal difference.

Zsolt Lőw on Bremen

"There's a lot at stake. We want to do our homework and win the last two games to maintain our chance of a Champions League place. Werder also are hoping to make it into Europe. It will be a very interesting game. I hope we can take the three points. Bremen can be very powerful in front of their own fans. They're a force there. Bremen's great strength is in the transition after winning the ball. We have to make sure we don't lose the ball too often and don't give them the opportunity to punish us."
camera-photo

Ole Werner on Leipzig

“They possess an individual quality which sets them apart from other teams in the division. They changed a couple of things when the new coach came in, focusing more on the sole players, while pressing high and attempting varied passing sequences. Nevertheless, each game is different on the whole. We need to demonstrate our own capabilities if we are to leave the field as the winning side.”

Familiar faces

Both Oli Burke and André Silva have a Leipzig connection, with Silva currently on loan from the Red Bulls and Burke having played for them in the 2016/17 season.

All to play for

Leipzig are on a three-game winless streak in the Bundesliga and their entire campaign hangs in the balance. With just two matches left, they can still qualify for the Champions League or miss out on Europe entirely.

Green shoots

The home side are unbeaten in six matches (four wins, two draws) and maintain the chance to qualify for Europe for the first time in 15 years. A win against Leipzig would be a huge boost to the European bid.
