Full-time: Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 St. Pauli

A breathless start to the match, featuring two goals in the opening five minutes, ends 2-2, with both sides deserving a point. The result suits St. Pauli, who are as good as safe now. Frankfurt aren’t satisfied, however. They go into the final day with their Champions League hopes still up in the air and facing a massive game at direct rivals Freiburg.

Wide from Weißhaupt!

Pauli break forward against the run of play and Weißhaupt is sent through on goal. He takes the ball too wide to the left to evade a defender and leaves himself too tight an angle. His shot is overcooked, rolling past the far post.

Half-time: Frankfurt 1-2 St. Pauli

A blistering start to the match saw both sides score inside the first five minutes, before Frankfurt took charge of possession. That didn’t stop the visitors hitting them on the break to snatch a lead in the 16th minute. Pauli are dogged, happy to sit deep and menacing on the counter. Frankfurt have it all to do in the second period.

As things stand...

If the scores stay as they are now, Pauli will jump above Hoffenheim going into the final matchday. The latter have Bayern in their final game of the season, and are just two points above Heidenheim, in the relegation play-off place. This result could be huge for Pauli.

Some entire games struggle to serve up as many expected goals as we've had in the opening quarter of this clash.

Guilavogui gives Pauli the lead!

After a few minutes of sustained Frankfurt pressure, Voll catches a long ball and pumps it forward to Guilavogui, waiting on the halfway line. He's under pressure from a defender but shrugs him off and takes a good first touch before racing through on goal. He has a long way to go, but holds his nerve, rounding Trapp and finishing into an empty net. Superb counter.

The visitors hit back almost immediately. A break down the left flank sees Sinani square across the box to Guilavogui. The forward can't get a shot away, and feeds it back to Saliakas, lurking on the edge of the box. The latter sends a cross/shot from the right sailing over Trapp and inside the far post. Kristensen opens the scoring!

What a ridiculous start by the home side. Not even 30 seconds have elapsed before Kristensen pokes home from close range after a blistering counter attack straight from kick-off. Ekitiké races down the right wing before feeding the ball inside. Kristensen and Larsson exchange passes on the edge of the Pauli box before the latter finishes. Wow.

Voll's chance

As mentioned below, with Nikola Vasilj suspended today, the 24-year-old Ben Voll steps in between the posts for the Boys in Brown. Signed from Viktoria Köln last summer, Voll has been limited to three Regionalliga Nord games and just a few minutes of senior game time against Stuttgart last weekend, when Vasilj was ordered off late on.

Eintracht name the same starting XI two games running for the first time since January. Oladapo Afolayan is in from the get-go for the first time in a month for the visitors.

Pauli's away form to be tested Frankfurt

St. Pauli have gone unbeaten in their last two Bundesliga away games - a first for the club this season. The Hamburg team's 17 points on the road are already a new club record for the ‘Kiezkickers’ in the Bundesliga. However, since the turn of the millennium, St. Pauli have won only one of their eight competitive matches against Frankfurt: a 2-0 home win in the 2nd Bundesliga in December 2011 (one of the goalscorers was Max Kruse).

Alexander Blessin on Frankfurt

I like games like this and, from what I've heard, so do our lads. We know that they really want to reach the Champions League. We know their strength and individual quality. We have to be very clear in our heads and take the right measures. It has a lot to do with courage and good turnovers in certain positions. We are well prepared.

Permutations

Frankfurt's place in the UEFA Champions League will be secure if they win. Even in defeat, though, they can reach that goal if Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig fail to beat Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen respectively. A draw, meanwhile, will be enough if Dortmund do not win. Pauli, meanwhile, will be automatically secure of staying up if they win, while a point would almost certainly do the job considering their superior goal difference over 16th-placed Heidenheim.
camera-photo

Dino Toppmöller on St. Pauli

"The team is solid, has very good defensive stability and is very well attuned to the opposition in every game they play. They have really good ideas going forward. What they lack is the precision in the final third because they don't have the player who guarantees 10 goals a season. But the passages of play are very good to watch. We should go into this one with focus, sharpness and aggression."

So close

St. Pauli are within touching distance of securing their place in the Bundesliga for next season, with five points between them and the relegation playoff place with two games to go. Ensuring their safety won't be easy though, as they face a strong Frankfurt side and a Bochum team looking to end their season on a high.

Pauli in survival mode

The visitors can seal Bundesliga survival with a win against Eintracht Frankfurt. Should Heidenheim and Kiel both lose on Saturday, they'll achieve the same feat without even needing to kick a ball.

Champions League football beckons

A Frankfurt victory at home to Pauli will seal their Champions League qualification, regardless of results elsewhere on Matchday 33. The Eagles are in excellent form, too, having lost just one of their previous seven Bundesliga games.
