Full-time: Kiel 1-2 Pauli

It's heartbreak at the end for Kiel as Geschwill's own goal in stoppage time tipped the balance of this relegation six pointer in St. Pauli's favour. It's even more bitter when you consider that, in trying desperately not to lose the match, neither side committed too many men forward in what was an attritional second half. But ultimately, this may prove to be a massive three points for the Hamburg club in their quest for Bundesliga survival.

Own goal breaks Kiel hearts!

A ball over the top finds Noah Weißhaupt in the Kiel box. He strikes it on the half-volley, forcing a great save out of Thomas Dähne. Geschwill doesn't head it clear, though, allowing Weißhaupt another chance. The forward lifts it over the keeper and Geschwill, in trying to clear the ball off his line, just about puts it in his own net. It's not immediately obvious, but goal-line technology confirms it crossed the line!

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG values would suggest that Kiel are good value for this draw as things stand, whilst St. Pauli are well-deserving of their goal.

Half-time: Kiel 1-1 St. Pauli

The teams are level as they head in at the half-time break of this relegation six pointer. St. Pauli started stronger, but Kiel took the lead with their first shot of the game, courtesy of Bernhardsson. Pauli responded quickly, with Sinani reacting quickest to follow-up a rebound. For all of Pauli's dominance in possession and their frequency of chances, it's been Kiel who've had the better of the opportunities with Remberg hitting the woodwork and Knudsen troubling Vasilj at the end of the half.

Sliced

A Machino long throw-in from the left drops kindly for Bernhardsson at the far post. The goalscorer swings a powerful leg at it on the half-volley, but completely miscues his attempt, allowing Pauli to clear.
39'

Woodwork

Tolkin takes the subsequent free-kick. The initial header from a Pauli defender launches it up into the air before Vasilj tries to punch it, but the goalkeeper's attempt is not a convincing one. It falls to Remberg, whose header rattles off the crossbar. It ricochets back to Knudsen, who heads again, but this time it's blocked off the line by a Pauli defender. What a chance that was!
38'

Nemeth booked

The Pauli defender picks up the first yellow card of the game, after pulling Machino back and preventing a counter-attack for Kiel.
34'

Sinani brings Pauli level!

Treu puts a long throw into the box from the left. Rosenboom heads it clear initially, but Saad pounces on the second ball, floating a cross back into the middle. Afolayan challenges Dähne, causing the goalkeeper to spill the cross. Sinani is quickest to react, smashing the loose ball home into an empty net! After a lengthy check with both Afolayan and Dähne down after the challenge, the check is cleared and the goal stands.

Individual excellence from Saad

The Tunisian shows off his skillset as he brings down a long ball over the top with the outside of his boot, beating two Kiel defenders. Without support, he goes alone, his effort from range being deflected behind for a corner. Kiel won the first header from the subsequent set-piece, but Pauli rework it, finding Saad at the edge of the box, who lets fly again. This time, it flies over the bar.

Clinical Kiel take the lead!

The hosts score with their first shot on goal. Tolkin drives down the left flank, cutting it inside to Gigović. The midfielder slides it to Bernhardsson, who strikes it first-time, wrapping his left foot around the ball and curling it into the bottom left corner with a precision finish. Marcel Rapp will be delighted with how his team have started here...

All the chances have gone the way of the visitors so far this afternoon. Pauli haven't done quite enough to properly trouble Dähne in the Kiel goal, but by contrast, the hosts are yet to pull the trigger.

Pauli team news

Likewise Alexander Blessin also makes two changes from last week's home draw against Gladbach. Dźwigała starts in the back-three, replacing Ritzka, who isn't selected and the goalscorer against Gladbach Afolayan gets the nod over Weißhaupt, who takes his place on the bench.

More on that Kiel side

For Marcel Rapp, there are two changes to his side that drew 1-1 away at Mainz on Matchday 28. Zec is suspended for yellow card acquisition and, as such, Ivezić takes his place in the heart of defence. Knudsen also starts over Skrzybski in midfield, who drops to the bench.

Marcel Rapp on facing St. Pauli

"We know how important the game is - we all realise that - and yet we’ll go into this game with a sense of optimism, as always. We simply want to put in a good performance in front of superb support from our fans. I expect a really good atmosphere on Saturday so we're looking forward to the game."

Alexander Blessin on facing Kiel

“Kiel are a team who always like to play football, but in the home game they abandoned that approach a bit. I don’t think they’ll do it again. They play with intensity and never give up. They put a lot of emphasis on second balls. We have to get their front three under control because they rotate a lot in attack.”

Classic six-pointer

Basement club Kiel sit four points behind Heidenheim, who occupy the relegation play-off position, while Pauli are just four points above Heidenheim. A win for either side would do wonders for survival hopes while directly hurting a rival.
