Full-time: Frankfurt 3-0 Heidenheim

It's a comprehensive victory for Frankfurt who claim another crucial three points in their quest for Champions League football next season, but it's a bitter one for Heidenheim, who remain in the relegation play-off spot. The visitors started the second half positively, creating much more going forward, with Conteh particularly catching the eye, but after Pieringer missed a golden opportunity, you got the feeling it wasn't going to be Heidenheim's day. That feeling was only reinforced when Hugo Ekitiké rounded off a great move to make it three, ending the competition after 70 minutes.

Wahi denied

Once again, the striker is played through for another one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He tries to bend it round Kevin Müller, but the Heidenheim keeper is quick off his line to close down the angle and make the save. That was Wahi's second big chance this game for him to grab his first Bundesliga goal.
86'

Wide from Wahi

Farès Chaïbi threads a great ball through the middle of the Heidenheim backline for Wahi to chase. The striker tries to poke it past the goalkeeper with his toe, but it was always curling away from goal.
84'

Offside

Mainka picks out a good run from Schimmer inside the Frankfurt box. Right in front of Santos, he trips before managing to get his shot away, but it wouldn't have counted anyway as the assistant had his flag raised.
81'

Into orbit

You can't fault him for trying, but a very speculative effort by Keller from about 35 yards out balloons well over the bar and into the stands. A couple of his teammates had been calling for the ball there.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG values indicate that the lead is no less than Frankfurt deserve, although Heidenheim have been unlucky not to score themselves.

Not meant to be for Theate

Frankfurt work it well again, culminating in Ekitiké laying it off to Theate, who had rushed up from the back and forced a fantastic save out of Kevin Müller from close range. The Belgian has had two great opportunities today but his first Bundesliga goal continues to elude him.

The goalscorer departs

Just before the third goal, Bahoya, who opened the scoring this afternoon, was replaced by Mario Götze.

Ekitiké surely seals the win!

It's incredible the way Frankfurt turn defence into attack. Santos plays a ball up from the back. Ekitiké heads it down for Mario Götze, who is instantly involved. The German shifts it onto Farès Chaïbi, who slips Brown through to the byline. The wide man cuts it back to Ekitiké - the man who started the move - for a finish into an open net at the far post. A true team goal!

Double change

Schmidt opts for another double change as Heidenheim continue to chase the game. Schimmer and Föhrenbach replace Krätzig and Busch. Can the substitutes help their side find a way back into this one?
63'

Good stop

Conteh has been really lively for the visitors since coming on. This time, he cuts it back from the byline and into the path of Wanner, who gets a shot off, but Santos is there to make the save.
61'

Off the bar!

How did that stay out? Hugo Ekitiké plays a low cross into the six-yard box from the left, looking for Chaïbi in the middle. Siersleben slides in to make the block, steering it goalwards and past his keeper, but he's saved by the bar, which rattles after his clearance.

Pieringer squanders a golden chance!

You simply can't miss those when you're fighting for survival! Conteh is played in behind and after nutmegging Theate, he lays it off to Pieringer, who has a free shot from inside 10 yards, but drags his shot wide of the left post. He had to hit the target there...

Watched all the way

A long ball over the top for Frankfurt is aimed towards Bahoya. Mainka is the only one back for Heidenheim, and has to get the header right under pressure from the winger. The centre-back brings it down coolly, before managing to clear the danger. Great composure from the captain!
49'

Rushed

It's another chance for Heidenheim. The ball drops for Conteh on the edge of the box, who snatches at the effort, sending it well off target.
48'

Miscued

An opportunity opens up for Pieringer on the edge of the Frankfurt box. The striker tries to bend one into the top right corner, but his effort is high and wide.
46'

Back underway!

Uzun rolls the ball back as Frankfurt kick the second half off. Frank Schmidt makes two changes at half-time: Wanner and Conteh replace Dorsch and Gimber. The Heidenheim boss is seemingly inject some added firepower in the second half. Will it pay off?

Half-time: Frankfurt 2-0 Heidenheim

Heading in at the break and in complete control, Dino Toppmöller will be pleased with how his team have performed in the first half. Bahoya was a standout performer, nearly setting up a goal in the opening minutes before giving his side the lead inside the tenth. Heidenheim showed resilience without troubling the Frankfurt goal until an unlikely goalscorer in the form of Robin Koch made it two to the Eagles. A golden chance for Pieringer just before the break could have halved the defecit, but as it stands, Heidenheim have a lot of work to do in the second half.

Miscontrolled!

Ekitiké takes a tumble on the edge of the Heidenheim box and the Frankfurt players scream for a free-kick. Admist the protests, Heidenheim break and find themselves in a two-on-one scenario. Pieringer is played through on goal, but the ball is caught under his feet and the chance goes begging.
43'

Koch makes it two!

Frankfurt double their advantage with something of an atypical goalscorer! Theate plays a cross from deep in towards Ekitiké. The Frenchman controls it in the box with his studs, touching it down for Koch, who had continued a great run from deep and is rewarded when he smashes the loose ball home into the bottom right corner. A striker's finish from Frankfurt's centre-back there!

Never say die

Released with a long ball over the top, Ekitiké chases the ball to the byline. It looks as if he won't get there, but the Frenchman slides to keep it in play right at the byline, before losing out to a Heidenheim defender. The home crowd loved that display of hard work, however, fervently applauding their no. 11.
33'

Hopeful

That was a disappointing end to a promising move. Heidenheim enjoy a spell of prolonged possession around the edge of the Frankfurt box. Eventually, it's worked to Busch, who tries a speculative effort, but he doesn't catch it at all properly and the ball trickles harmlessly behind for a goal-kick.

Side netting!

Hugo Ekitiké cuts it back from the byline with an inviting ball into the box. Theate comes steaming in, striking it first-time with his favoured left foot and with the whole of the goal to aim at, but he can only find the side netting. That was a golden opportunity to make it 2-0!

Bahoya breaks the deadlock!

It's the Eagles who taste first blood. Ekitiké, Chaïbi and Bahoya all triangulate excellently in a well-worked team goal. From the left flank, Ekitiké plays Chaïbi through to the byline, from where the midfielder cuts it back into the path of Bahoya, who strokes it home from close range with a composed finish. Overhit

Frankfurt find themselves in a four-on-three scenario. Ekitiké tries to pick out Bahoya at the far post, but he puts too much on the pass, forcing Bahoya wide. The winger manages to win a corner, but the hosts can't make anything of it.

Heidenheim's first corner

An out-swinger is taken from the left. Jan Schöppner flicks it onto Siersleben, who has a free header at the far post, but Santos makes a good save to deny him.

Tenacious Krätzig

The Frankfurt corner is played back to Højlund, who is pressed energetically by Krätzig. The Heidenheim youngster wins out and plays it forward for Pieringer, whose shot is deflected behind for a corner.

Bahoya beats his man down the left and fizzes a low cross towards the back post. Chaïbi and Kristensen are arriving but neither player can manage to get a toe to it, which is all it would've needed. It seemingly took them both by surprise to have such a good chance so early on...

More on that Heidenheim side

By contrast, Frank Schmidt names an unchanged side from their last outing in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Leverkusen. The Baden-Württemberg side put in a really resilient performance against the champions, only falling to a 91st minute winner from Emi Buendía.

Frankfurt team news

For Dino Toppmöller's side, there are four changes from last week's 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen. Kristensen, Højlund, Uzun and Chaïbi all return to the starting line-up, replacing Collins, Brown, Larsson, and Götze, who all drop to the bench.

Late danger

Against Leverkusen, Heidenheim conceded a goal in second-half stoppage time for the sixth time this season - that's more than any other team in the top flight.

Road warriors?

Heidenheim secured three precious points when they won their last away game 1-0 in Wolfsburg, and if they can do the same thing in Frankfurt, that would mark the first time the club has ever notched back-to-back Bundesliga wins.

Landmark appearance on the cards

Perennial fan-favourite Patrick Mainka has played every minute for Heidenheim this season. If he starts again in Frankfurt, it will mark his 250th appearance for the Baden-Württemberg side.

Frank Schmidt on facing Frankfurt

"Of course, they've got a lot of strength with Larsson, Skhiri and Götze, for example. But above all, they have pace in many positions. We have to defend against that, especially if we lose the ball. We saw that in the reverse fixture, when they punished us bitterly after our Chelsea game, but also last year in Frankfurt, after Frankfurt were knocked out of the Europa League and didn't give us any breathing space."
camera-photo

Toppmöller's thoughts on facing Heidenheim

Heidenheim have a sort of brutal energy and a big heart. They always try to leave everything out on the pitch. They're doing better now because they can prepare for each game week in, week out and therefore have more energy [without playing in the Conference League]. Heidenheim can be unpleasant for any opponent to play against."

Frankfurt on course for the UCL and possibly their best ever points tally

Although Frankfurt have somewhat stuttered in recent weeks, they remain in control of their own destiny in third place. They also already have more points than they achieved in the entirety of last season and should they manage to pick up 13 points from their remaining 6 games, then they will set a new club record for Bundesliga points in a season.

Favourite opponent

So far, Frankfurt have won every meeting with Heidenheim. Three of those victories have come in the Bundesliga, while they have also beaten Frank Schmidt's men in the DFB Cup. They will therefore be confident of victory here.

Difficult second half of the season

Last term's eighth-placed side Heidenheim have struggled in this second part of the campaign. Their eight points is the worst total, whilst their return of 12 goals is the second-worst after St. Pauli.
