Full-time: Gladbach 1-2 Freiburg

A massive win for the visitors, who leapfrog direct rivals for a European space to go sixth in the Bundesliga table – for the time being at least. Manzambi's very first goal for Freiburg sealed the win in the final minute of normal time. It was a deserved victory, too, with only one team in it after Gladbach took an early lead.

Manzambi with the winner?

Surely that settles it! Freiburg patiently build up from the back, looking for openings. The ball is eventually shuffled down the right flank, where Dōan has space to cross. He chips an inch-perfect ball across the area and onto the onrushing head of Manzambi, who directs his header into the net. Thoroughly deserved for the visitors.

The Czech forward has space to shoot from the edge of the Freiburg box. He catches hold of it, but it's not close enough to the corner and Müller holds it.

Hack caught off guard

A looping Gladbach cross from the right is nodded on to the back post, where Hack awaits, unmarked. But the ball catches him by surprise and bounces awkwardly away from goal. The winger turns and tres to stab it back towards goal but makes a hash of it. The 'keeper gathers.

Sweeping changes for both sides

A little more energy is sure to be injected into this game with four subs made in total.

Sensational run

Rosenfelder carries the ball out of defence, evades two challenges and powers into Gladbach's half. He pushes the ball by another defender and then bursts past the last man and races towards goal. He's struggling by the time he reaches it though and is caught by the defender. Had he made it through and scored, it might have been an all-time great goal.

Stunning save!

Freiburg look to have scored after a ball into a crowded Gladbach box is poked goalward by Höler. Pereira Cardoso throws himself backwards and just manages to claw it out before it crosses the line. There's a goalmouth scramble thereafter but it leads to nothing. Candidate for save of the season.

Denied

Dōan steals the ball on the halfway line and races towards goal, he slips a neat pass down the line to Kübler, who crosses from the right of the Gladbach box. It's dangerous but Itakura gets back to make a brilliant headed intervention to clear.

Half-time: Gladbach 1-1 Freiburg

All square at the break in a game which has lacked cutting edge at times. An unfortunate own goal for Günter handed Gladbach the lead in the 14th minute, before Osterhage drew the sides level with a close-range header just two minutes later. All to play for in the second period.

Dōan just wide!

The Japanese playmaker cuts inside from the right wing and feeds the ball to Eggestein, with his back to goal inside the Gladbach box. The midfielder manages to keep hold of the ball before feeding it back to Dōan, on the edge of the area now. He smacks a low shot at the right post but it sails just wide.
43'

Gentle simmer

The game settles down, with neither side wanting to make any gaffes before half-time.
38'

Hack strikes the post!

So close from the Foals wide man. Pléa and Kleindienst look to exchange a neat one-two inside the Freiburg box but a defender prevents the return pass. Hack darts in to steal the ball away and keeps the move alive. He takes a touch to the right and looks to shoot from a tight angle. His effort beats Müller but rolls onto the far post. So close.

A neat pass through the lines finds Grifo with space to turn on the edge of the Gladbach box. He feeds it wide-right to Kübler, who smashes a shot towards the near post. The net ripples and the away fans go bananas for a moment... only before realising the ball actually struck the outside of the net. Goal kick.

Well, that didn't take long! Just two minutes after going behind, the visitors draw level. Kübler finds space to cross from the right flank and Osterhage bursts into the box to plant a header down into the ground and past Pereira Cardoso, who gets a hand to it but can't keep it out. Game on.

Freiburg make two changes

Schuster takes a leaf out of Seoane's book and also swaps a pair of players from his side's last game, a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Günter comes in for Makengo at left-back, while Gregoritsch drops to the bench for Adamu at centre-forward.

Gladbach make two changes

Coach Seoane reshuffles the side that drew 1-1 against St. Pauli last weekend. Netz comes in at fullback for Ullrich. Neuhaus comes in for the absent Reitz to play alongside Weigl in midfield.

Julian Schuster on facing Gladbach

“Gladbach have the playing ability to beat a high counter press. They can sit deep when they need to and have players who are very quick in the transition. In the box, they have players who can be very dangerous in front of goal. At home, they have been very strong and consistent too. A point in Gladbach isn’t a bad result, but we’ll have to be compact, press well and be very flexible.”

Gerardo Seoane on facing Freiburg

"Freiburg are a side that are difficult to play through. They are dangerous and clinical in attack, while also having a solid defence. They have a good mix of youth and experience. Our goal has to be to not give up many chances against them. We need to be in control both with and without the ball."
