Full-time: Kiel 2-2 Bochum

The points are shared in Kiel. After having dominated the first half, Bochum were significantly more quiet in the second and Kiel's half-time changes turned it around. A superb Tolkin free-kick set up Zec to level it just after the restart and after that Kiel pushed on. Arp was a menace down the left flank all half, terrorising the Bochum backline. Kiel struck the post twice and Holtby thought he'd won it late on, but a VAR review disallowed his goal for a foul in the build-up. It was a relegation battle that had everything.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Despite the disparity between each side's xG, Bochum and Kiel remain level here at 2-2.

Half-time: Kiel 1-2 Bochum

It's been an enthralling start to this huge relegation encounter. Skrzybski continued his fantastic recent goalscoring form as he stepped up to convert a penalty inside three minutes. But it was Bochum who were lifted by the goal, the Ruhr club instantly looking for a response. Holtmann has been electric down the left and a quickfire Boadu brace brought the visitors level before then giving them the lead. It's been a physical encounter too, with three players already having to be substituted with injuries (two for Kiel, one for Bochum).

11'

Goal gaping

A clever quick throw-in from Wittek creates a chance for Bochum down the left. Bero whips it in, finding Boadu unmarked in the six-yard box. He has the whole of the goal to aim at, but a last-minute challenge from Komenda blocks it behind for a corner. What a chance to equalise!

Marcel Rapp on facing Bochum

“We know how their players play, we’ve had a look at them. We know what players to expect but we don’t know how they’ll line up. It always varies a bit with Bochum. We want to focus on ourselves but it’ll definitely be an exciting game.”
camera-photo

Dieter Hecking on facing Kiel

"Kiel have scored a lot of goals recently. They've found a system in which they feel comfortable. If they get into a transitional game, they can make life difficult for you. That's why we have to avoid losing the ball unnecessarily, especially in the centre."

Bochum need to find their stride

Bochum have their worst points tally at this stage in a season (after 20 matchdays) in what is their 38th Bundesliga campaign.
camera-photo

Kiel's winter business

The Storks likewise had a relatively quiet window. Their most high-profile signing came in the form of promising young USMNT wing-back John Tolkin on a permanent deal from New York Red Bulls. In the other direction, Tymoteusz Puchacz was sent out on loan to English club Plymouth Argyle.
camera-photo

Bochum's winter transfers

The Ruhr club secured a couple of deals over the winter transfer window. Defensive midfielder Tom Krauß was brought in on loan from Mainz, whilst attacking midfielder Lukas Daschner went out on loan to Swiss outfit St. Gallen, and Moritz-Broni Kwarteng joined Fortuna on loan in the Bundesliga 2.
camera-photo

Late blooming Storks

Kiel are no strangers to a late surge in form. The Storks were promoted last season thanks to a furious end to the season, winning 10 of their last 14 games in 2023/24. Furthermore, a Kiel substitute has scored at least one goal on each of the last four matchdays, with Steven Skrzybski scoring three in the last two games in Wolfsburg and Munich alone.
