Full-time: VfB Stuttgart 1-1 Hoffenheim

Stuttgart could not use a glut of chances in their final day home showdown with Hoffenheim to take any more than a point, with Tiago Tomas levelling after Ihlas Bebou had headed Hoffenheim in front. Stuttgart are to now contest a relegation play-off against the side finishing third in Bundesliga 2 - Hamburg or Heidenheim.

Coach’s view: Hoffenheim

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “I experienced a lot in my three years at Stuttgart, so am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again. [But] my first focus is that we win the game. We have a lot of reasons to perform well, none to let up. After the game and hopefully three points, I’ll obviously hope that Stuttgart stay up.”

Coach’s view: Stuttgart

Sebastian Hoeneß: "Right after last week's game I heard a lot of positive things in the dressing room, including that we’re not going to let anyone take this opportunity from us now. It’s going to be a difficult task that will demand everything from us, but if we keep a clear head, have a clear mindset and give everything we’ve got – without looking left or right [at other results] – we have a good chance of leaving the pitch as winners.”

Watch: Decision Day at Both Ends

The title, Europe, relegation – there’s still so much left to be decided at both ends of the table on the final day of the Bundesliga season.

Stuttgart: personnel

Dan-Axel Zagadou remains a doubt for VfB after going off against Mainz following a clash of heads. However, Borna Sosa is expected to return after missing out with illness, meaning Nikolas Nartey could make way on the left. Chris Führich (pictured with Josha Vagnoman) received plenty of plaudits from coach Sebastian Hoeneß after his goal and two assists off the bench in Mainz, which could result in promotion to the starting XI in place of Tiago Tomas.

Stuttgart: form

Just a second away win of the season last weekend in Mainz and run of only one defeat in the last seven has lifted Stuttgart out of the drop zone and in control of their top-flight survival going into the final day. They are a point ahead of Schalke in 17th and the final automatic relegation spot. They may be level on points with Bochum in the play-off spot, but their vastly superior goal difference effectively counts for an extra point and keeps the 2006 Bundesliga champions in the driving seat and not reliant on other results, if they do their bit at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Hoffenheim: personnel

Experienced defensive duo Pavel Kaderabek and Kevin Vogt have been joined on the sidelines by Kevin Akpoguma for Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side. Dennis Geiger is struggling with a back issue that may force him to sit this one out, but Jacob Bruun Larsen returned to the squad for the first time in 2023 last time out against Union. Andrej Kramaric and Christoph Baumgartner (both pictured) are nailed on for two of the three berths up front.

Hoffenheim: form

Since falling to the foot of the table in March after a 14-game winless run, Hoffenheim have picked up 16 of a possible 27 points in nine games to effectively guarantee their safety in 13th after beating top-four hopefuls Union Berlin 4-2 last time out. They are not mathematically assured of top-flight football in 2023/24, but it would take an unprecedented set of results to relegate the Sinsheim club for the first time.

Watch: Hoffenheim 4-2 Union Berlin - highlights

Hoffenheim took a huge win against Union Berlin last weekend to effectively ensure their Bundesliga survival. Andrej Kramaric scored twice to take his tally to seven in his past nine appearances.

Guirassy goal glut

Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy has scored in each of his past four Bundesliga matches.

Super Sebastian

Sebastian Hoeneß has lost just one of seven matches since he took charge of Stuttgart. If you make a league table from when he started the job, Stuttgart would be as high as fifth.

Stuttgart's happy home Hoffenheim history

Stuttgart are unbeaten in Hoffenheim's past five visits, last being defeated by them back in September 2014 (0-2).

Both coaches v former club

Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß had his first coaching job at Hoffenheim (in 2020/21 and 2021/22) while Hoffenheim boss Pellegrino Matarazzo took Stuttgart up to the Bundesliga in 2020 as part of a spell of around three years in charge.

Croatian catch-up

Hoffenheim's Andrej Kramaric and Stuttgart's Borna Sosa were Croatia team-mates at the World Cup, achieving an impressive third place together.

Stuttgart seek safety

With Hoffenheim essentially safe due to their good goal difference, Stuttgart know a win will see them also survive in the Bundesliga for another season.
