MARTIN WIDE!

Bell is up in the box again but has his shot blocked this time. It comes out to Martin arriving from the left and he hits it first time, but it fizzes wide of the far post.

AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

Burkardt's five attempts on goal is only one fewer than Augsburg as a team.

ONISIWO!

Great break from Mainz and Onisiwo is sent away from the halfway line. He sidesteps a challenge, rounds Gikiewicz to the left, but can't catch up with the ball to tap it in and ends up firing wide as the angle narrows.
77'

BURKARDT OFF

A big hug from coach Bo Svensson as the the two-goal and one-assist hero departs.
72'

BURKARDT BRACE!

He's been superb tonight and it's two goals now for Burkardt. Augsburg lose the ball inside their own half and Mainz are away. Onisiwo knocks the ball into the middle and into the path of Burkardt, who finishes on his left inside the near post. Nods of approval from Flick and Marcus Sorg in the stands as the U21 international caps his 50th Bundesliga game with a maiden brace.

ZEQIRI GETS ONE BACK!

A mere consolation or the start of a rousing comeback? Hahn crosses low from the right, Zeqiri gets across his man and the half-time sub flicks the ball inside the far post.

BELL AGAIN

Martin delivers a corner from the left - in front of a fan holding a Spanish flag with his name on it - and Bell gets his head to it. It's into the ground and bounces over the bar.

MANUEL ZENTNER?

A touch of Manuel Neuer from Robin Zentner there as he flies out of his box to head clear ahead of Vargas.
59'

CALIGIURI WIDE

The experienced Augsburg man cuts inside onto his left foot and looks for the near bottom corner. Zentner can watch it go wide.
56'

VARGAS!

Great run from the Switzerland international through the middle and onto a through ball. Zentner is flying out to try and intercept, but Vargas gets there first and hits it from the edge of the box. Over the bar, though.
55'

EVEN ON THE BALL

Mainz were up over 60% at one point in the first half. Augsburg have at least fought their way back into the game, if not on the scoreboard.

HANSI IN ATTENDANCE

Hansi Flick has made the short trip across the river from Frankfurt to Mainz to watch this game. Is he keeping a close eye on U21 striker Burkardt for the final two FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month with Germany already assured of their place in Qatar?
48'

ONISIWO!

Strobl might have only just come on but Onisiwo gets the better of him in a race and gets into the box, but his effort from the right is dragged well, well wide.
46'

AUGSBURG REACT

Perhaps little surprise that the visitors have made a couple of changes at the break with Zeqiri and Strobl on. It doesn't look to be a change of formation, though. Mainz obviously have no reason to want to alter anything.

ADDED TIME

Two more minutes for Augsburg to suffer before they can get inside. Although they may not be too keen on having to face the wrath of Weinzierl, either.

CLINICAL MAINZ

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).

GIKIEWICZ LIVID

The Augsburg goalkeeper is furious with how the players in front of him have defended and makes his opinion clear to them after that save.
40'

BURKARDT AGAIN!

The Augsburg defence again goes AWOL as Onisowo plays in Burkardt to the left of centre. Gikiewicz does very well again to deny him, though, staying big as long as possible and taking the shot in the chest.

MAINZ'S LIGHTNING START

Mainz have only scored three goals quicker in a Bundesliga game twice before. The last was in their 5-0 win at Werder Bremen on 17 December 2019 when they did so in 19 minutes.
33'

FIRST ATTEMPT

Augsburg finally test Zentner in the Mainz goal with a Vargas header, but it lacks any power to beat him.
30'

MAINZ IN GOOD COMPANY

Only Bayern (16) and Leverkusen (11) have scored more first-half goals in the Bundesliga this season than Mainz (8).

A BELL RARITY

It's only the second time Bell has ever scored from open play in the Bundesliga. The other time was on 22 November 2014 in a 202 draw against Freiburg. His other 10 goals had all come from set pieces.

TOUGH NOW

Augsburg are yet to earn a single point from a losing position this season. This is going to be an uphill challenge for the remaining 70+ minutes.
15'

BELLS ARE RINGING!

It's not often you see Stefan Bell as the furthest man forward, but what a job he's just done. Burkardt does excellently with his back to goal, turning the ball around the corner for the big centre-back to run onto and slot through the legs of Gikiewicz on the angle.

PERFECT START FROM ONISIWO

Mainz were all over Augsburg and they make that early pressure pay. Widmer's low cross to the edge of the box is completely missed by the swinging leg of Gumny. It's straight through to Onisiwo, who sits Gikiewicz down before burying the opening goal.

OXFORD BOOKED

The English defender trips Lee on the halfway line and picks up an early booking.
7'

SCRAMBLE!

Onisiwo remains alert in the Augsburg box as the visitors fail to clear their lines. He squares across goal, where Oxford gets a touch that almost puts it into his own net before Gikiewicz scrambles across to whack it clear.
6'

BELL BLOCKED

Martin's corner from the left is met by the powerful head of Bell up from the back. Hahn is well placed to clear ahead of Gikiewicz, though.
2'

ALMOST FOR BURKARDT

Mainz carve out the first attack of the evening down the right, with the ball played in low by Widmer looking for Burkardt. He's denied by a brace Gikiewicz coming out in the Augsburg goal.

FULL CIRCLE FOR AUGSBURG?

Augsburg’s goal in the 2-1 defeat to Dortmund two matchdays ago made them the last team to score away from home in the league this season. But they’re without a win on their travels in 10 games across multiple seasons (D2, L8), equalling the club record from 2011/12. Their last away win actually came at Mainz in February (1-0). In fact, Augsburg have won their last five games against the 05ers in the Bundesliga.

AUGSBURG SEEKING SECOND WIN

Augsburg’s 1-0 win over Gladbach on Matchday 5 remains their only victory of this season. They’ve picked up just one more point in the three games since, which was last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Bielefeld. Only four goals scored is also an unwanted record for the club after eight games in the Bundesliga.

MAINZ TURNAROUND?

The 05ers had nine points from the first four games of the season, but have only managed a single draw in the four since. They’ve actually lost the last three in a row. Five Bundesliga matches without a win would be a first for them in 2021. Now sitting in 11th, it’s the first time since Matchday 2 that Mainz have been in the bottom half of the table.

Jae-sung Lee and Aaron Martin are given their first starts since Matchday 2. Dominik Kohr returns from suspension, while Alexander Hack and Jonathan Burkardt also come in. Niklas Tauer, Leandro Barreiro, Anton Stach, Anderson Lucoqui and Marcus Ingvartsen drop to the bench.
