SPECULATIVE

Richter turns inside and takes on the shot from distance... wide. Pretty much sums up Hertha's efforts. They just haven't been able to trouble Gladbach from open play.

TOP MARKS FOR THURAM

Warm applause all round as Thuram, who won the penalty for Plea's opener, is replaced by returning captain Lars Stindl.
83'

0-100MPH

Sommer with a brave clearance from a corner. Kone's first to it, touching the ball to the right of his marker and setting Thuram free. He travels the length of the pitch, almost returning the favour on the edge of the Hertha box, where Kempf slides in to deny Kone a clear goalscoring opporunity.
79'

NETZ INJURED

This one doesn't look like cramp. Netz is off, with right-back Lainer on. Scally will move to left-back.

OFF THE BAR!

Ekkelenkamp pounces on Neuhaus' loose pass out from the back, before curling a deflected strike against the crossbar from range. Sommer was rooted to the spot!
76'

DOUBLE CHANGE

Richter, who scored one of his five goals this season in the reverse fixture - is on for Darida. Ekkelenkamp - super sub in times past - replaces Selke.
74'

BELFODIL!

Belfodil turns his man, before letting fly from fully 20 yards. Sommer's taking no chances, and springs to his right to beat it clear.

THURAM THE MAN

Marcus Thuram has been a thorn in the side of Hertha all game long. Can he cap his display with a third goal of the season?

KRAMER ON

Plea can't continue due to cramp. Kramer is on to beef up the midfield, and avoid another collapse like the one seen in Stuttgart last time out.
61'

ATTACKING SWITCH

Young Anton Kade is on for Peter Pekarik. That's a left winger for a right full-back - a change which was being made before Ginter's goal.

GINTER SCORES!

Hertha concede a 17th set-piece goal of the season as Ginter rises unmarked to head in Netz's corner. Huge ask for the Old Lady now...

SCALLY!

Almost a second Bundesliga goal for Joe Scally. Thuram twists this way and that, before pulling back a cross for the American. He hits it really well, but Lotka gets tow hands to it to push over.
54'

FLYING SAVE!

Hertha with a string of set pieces, the latest of which sees Plattenhardt find Kempf from a corner. He heads goalwards, forcing a diving save out of Sommer. Whatever Korkut said at half time is working...

SERDAR ON

Positive from Korkut - it needed to be. Serdar is on for the more defensively minded Ascacibar.

HALF-TIME: GLADBACH 1-0 HERTHA

Plea's penalty is the difference at the break, but Gladbach should arguably be two or three goals to the good. Big team talk needed in the Hertha dressing room. They've been second best in every department.

GLADBACH DENIED!

Thuram collects a pass from Plea and proceeds to round Lotka - or at least try to. Kempf slides in, getting more man than ball, but the penalty's not given.

COUNTER CHANCE!

Gladbach on the counter with Thuram. The Frenchman has Embolo and Plea to his right, but goes it alone and hits his shot straight at Lotka.

THURAM!

Hertha back off as Thuram picks up possession in a dangerous area. He takes aim from the edge of the box, curling an effort narrowly wide of the far post. It's men aganst boys at times...

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC

Scally goes into the Hertha box, only for Gechter to make a telling interception. This is feeling like a real mismatch - can Gladbach find the second goal to confirm their dominance?

LOTKA TO THE RESCUE

Embolo uses his strength to shrug off Ascacibar, but Lotka is out to smother on the edge of the six-yard area.

EMBOL-NO!

So close to the opening goal. Plea's right-wing free-kick is cleared to the angle of the six-yard area. Embolo sticks out his right boot to loop the ball goalwards, but it comes back off the upright. Superb effort!

ASCACIBAR CONCERN

HISTORY AGAINST HERTHA

The last time Hertha went eight matches to start a Rückrunde without a win, they were relegated (1990/91). The Old Lady have claimed just two points across their last seven away Bundesliga games, and won only one of their previous 10 in Mönchengladbach (D2, L7).

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

Lars Stindl is back on the Gladbach bench today, following seven matches out with a knee injury. The Borussia captain has only scored twice in the league this season, but was the Foals' 14-goal leading marksman last term. His experience will be crucial down the back straight...

KORKUT CALLS FOR FIGHT

Tayfun Korkut's Hertha are winless in eight, losing their last four on the spin. "We need to be more stable and more aggressive, but we can’t forget where the goal is if we want to win games," he stressed. "Gladbach have their problems too – their squad has lots of quality, but the club definitely had different goals at the start of the season. Things aren't going well right now for either side, so we need to take the game to them."

HÜTTER AT HOME

With Adi Hütter in self-isolation following his positive Covid test, assistant coach Christian Peintinger takes charge of Gladbach. "We have obviously been tinkering with a few things during the week, all in close discussion with Adi though," he said. "I won’t be in contact with Adi during the game on Saturday, Armin Reutershahn and I will focus solely on the match. I will definitely be emotionally invested and will try to impact the game positively from the touchline."

FORM: HERTHA

Gladbach are almost sitting pretty compared to Hertha’s predicament right now. The Berliners haven’t won a game since stunning Borussia Dortmund in the final fixture of 2021, only managing to pick up two more points in the ensuing eight matches. Last week’s heavy 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, coupled with Stuttgart's win over Gladbach and draw with Union, leaves them in the automatic drop zone on goal difference.

FORM: GLADBACH

Having kicked off 2022 with victory away at Bayern Munich, it looked like Gladbach would move clear of the relegation drama after a tough start to the season. But that hasn’t happened, with Ginter & Co. only managing five points in the seven league outings since, conceding 18 goals in that time. They begin the weekend four points clears of the relegation play-off spot.

MORE ON THOSE TEAMS

Borussia show three changes to the side that threw away a 2-0 lead in defeat to Stuttgart. Jordan Beyer returns in defence, with Ramy Benebaini unavailable. There's a change of system as Christoph Kramer makes way for ex-Hertha winger Luca Netz in midfield. Top scorer Jonas Hofmann misses out, while Breel Embolo leads the line. Hertha still have Borussia Dortmund-bound Marcel Lotka in goal. The Polish stopper has a back three of Linus Gechter, Niklas Stark and Marc-Oliver Kempf in front of him, with Peter Pekarik and Marvin Plattenhardt on the flanks. There’s no Stevan Jovetic or Suar Serdar, though. Ishak Belfodil and Davie Selke are the front two.
