Dardai - the son of former Hertha coach Pal Dardai - has never played against Bayern before. The 19-year-old has 19 Bundesliga appearances to his name so far and forms part of a relatively inexperienced rearguard including 17-year-old Gechter, who features in his fifth top-flight game. Julian Nagelsmann's side have been far more accustomed to winning this term, taking maximum points from eight of their last nine matches in all competitions. Hertha can dare to dream, however, as Bayern have already lost three times in the Bundesliga in 2021/22, most recently at the start of January with a home reverse to Gladbach. Augsburg (Matchday 12) and Eintracht Frankfurt (Matchday 7) are the other teams to have beaten the defending champions so far this season.

The home side have blown more cold than hot this season, and are winless since the turn of the year after losing at home to Cologne on Matchday 18, drawing 0-0 with Wolfsburg last weekend and losing to city rivals Union in the DFB Cup on Wednesday. However, they did beat Dortmund 3-2 at home in their last game of 2021, one of just two victories in the seven competitive games under new coach Tayfun Korkut so far (D2 L3).

It hasn't been as one-sided as you might think in recent years, however, even if Bayern have won each of the last four. Bastian Dankert is today's official, and the 41-year-old takes charge of his 128th Bundesliga game. It's the first time he's ever refereed this particular fixture, and also the first time he's officiated a match involving either of these teams this season.
THE STAKES
Bayern will arguably feel affronted at having their lead at the top of the table reduced to a mere three points by Dortmund yesterday, meaning they'll be in no mood for anything but a win. For Hertha, meanwhile, a victory would do wonders for their self-confidence in a relegation battle that is shaping up to include almost all of the teams in the bottom half of the table. Should they triumph here, Hertha would pull six points clear of the drop zone, and seven ahead of the automatic relegation places.
