Chadrac Akolo missed a penalty with the last kick of the game as Thomas Müller's second-half strike proved enough for Bayern Munich to beat VfB Stuttgart.

Stuttgart 0-1 Bayern Munich

Goals: 0-1 Müller (79')

Hannes Wolf’s side suffered their first home defeat of the season against Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 15 but the Swabians started with a spring in their step against the league leaders, Akolo twice going close in the opening minutes. Bayern soon found their rhythm, though, and very nearly took the lead when Robert Lewandowski’s low effort was palmed to safety by Ron-Robert Zieler. The former Leicester City stopper was forced into action again ten minutes before the interval, rushing out of his goal to prevent Corentin Tolisso from giving the visitors a narrow half-time lead.

Bayern continued to turn the screw after the break, Kingsley Coman forcing Zieler into another sprawling stop before Lewandowski and James Rodriguez both failed to hit the target from close range. Jerome Boateng saw a speculative drive tipped over the crossbar by the 28-year-old custodian, but there was nothing the Stuttgart ‘keeper could do to prevent Müller from putting the Bavarians in front with 11 minutes remaining. The hosts were handed a golden opportunity to earn an unlikely point when Niklas Süle fouled Santiago Ascacibar inside the box in the third minute of stoppage time, but Akolo's resulting spot-kick was held by Sven Ulreich.
