Goals: 0-1 Diallo (19'), 1-1 Vestergaard (67')
Suat Serdar had an early effort saved well by Yann Sommer before Pablo De Blasis' curled shot brought an even better save out of the Gladbach custodian. Mainz continued to pose the greater threat and their efforts were rewarded when Diallo rose higher than Sommer to head the guests into a deserved lead. Thorgan Hazard almost lobbed Robin Zentner as Gladbach tried to respond, and the Mainz custodian almost helped them out as he lost sight of a ball as it rolled perilously towards his goal. Levin Öztunali thought he had given Mainz some breathing space, but his goal was ruled out by Video Assist.
As Gladbach adjusted to a more attack-minded set-up in the second half, Mainz started to play them at their own game with counter-attacking football. Serdar drilled a shot over before Öztunali struck into the side-netting at the end of another break. Jannik Vestergaard then followed Diallo's example by leaping high to head Gladbach level midway through the second half. Vincenzo Grifo nearly put the Foals in front as they started to gain the upper hand, but Mainz defended resolutely to hold onto a point which prevents the Foals from breaking into the top four, and edges them further away from the bottom three.
