Bayern Munich 3-0 Augsburg

Goals: 1-0 Vidal (31'), 2-0 Lewandowski (38'), 3-0 Lewandowski (49')

Keen to make amends after a 6-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena last season, Augsburg began by sitting deep and forcing their illustrious hosts to make the early running. For the first half-hour, the champions struggled, creating few chances, but after Arturo Vidal pounced following the visitors' failure to clear a corner, the floodgates opened. The Chilean was central to Bayern's second goal, too, nicking the ball in midfield and sending Robert Lewandowski in behind, the Pole making no mistake against the onrushing Marwin Hitz to double the lead before the interval.

Bayern emerged after the break with renewed intent and added to the lead almost immediately, Joshua Kimmich whipping in a delicious cross to the penalty spot, where Lewandowski was waiting to guide a volley past Hitz. It almost got worse for Augsburg immediately afterwards, too, with a Vidal header rattling the crossbar and bouncing into the Swiss custodian's grateful arms. Sensing another hammering could be on the cards, Augsburg dropped deeper after the third goal, preventing Bayern getting into any dangerous areas around the box. The hosts were limited to shots from distance in the closing stages – Arjen Robben and Kimmich coming close – but it mattered little as the damage had long since been done.
