Full time: Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-3 Nuremberg

Nuremberg were clearly the better and more purposeful team for a long time and were good value for their 3-0 lead. But ten spectacular minutes, in which Nuremberg lost control of the match, were enough for Düsseldorf to make up the three-goal deficit. Nuremberg thus miss the opportunity to knock on the door at the top in the promotion race, while Fortuna are very happy to take the point - especially after the way the match began.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Suddenly it's ten to four shots on goal and 3.33 to 2.33 xGoals for the home side. Statistically speaking, the incredible comeback is happening fair and square.

Düsseldorf keep pushing

Another corner sails into Nuremberg's penalty area, but this time the visitors manage to clear it. Fortuna, however, remain in possession.

Appelkamp's dream goal

His first goal this season – and what a strike! Previously this campaign, he had only ten shots on goal, all of which were unsuccessful. And now this!
78'

The equaliser!!!

It was starting to feel inevtiable! After Reichert rolls the ball out of defence, Jander loses the ball in a challenge with Appelkamp, who strikes it perfectly into the top corner from 23 metres out from a half-left position. Another goal from a substitute.

Oberdorf!

Fortuna have clearly grown in confidence here, and Oberdorf harnesses that as he takes a crack from 30 metres out. However, Reichert manages to defuse the swerving shot.

Danny's brace

For Schmidt, it's his first two-goal haul in Bundesliga 2. Last season he scored two braces – but he was still playing in the Regionalliga for Mainz U23.

Madness! The comeback goal!

What's going on here? Schmidt is playing the super sub today! This time Fortuna don't need three attempts - just two - from a move that again comes from a set piece. Siebert sends a high cross from the right half-space to the right post, and from there the ball bounces to the feet of Schmidt, who slots it in low with his right foot.

The substitute strikes!

After a corner from the left, Fortuna lay siege to the Nuremberg goal, getting two shots off that are initially blocked. However, Nuremberg can do nothing about Schmidt's header from point-blank range after Oberdorf conjured a perfect cross while falling. Can Fortuna turn this around? They still have over 20 minutes left.

Justvan's redemption

Justvan makes it 3-0!

Half-time: Düsseldorf 0-2 Nuremberg

With the half-time whistle, in-form Nuremberg increased their lead to 2-0. Düsseldorf haven't really found their way into the match so far, making too little of their opportunities in the final third and inviting the opposition to counter-attack all too often, with the visitors capitalising twice.

Nuremberg increase the lead! And how!

After Düsseldorf lose possession, Nuremberg move quickly as usual. A pass from Jander is enough to set up the just-praised Emreli, who wins the one-on-one against Kastenmeier, who is far off his line, by going around him and finding the net from 35 (!) metres out.

Kownacki with a header!

The Fortuna player tries to head a cross from the left across to Heyer, who stretches his leg as far as he can but still can't reach the ball. Perhaps attempting a shot on goal would have been the better option.

Nuremberg take the lead!

Düsseldorf are just getting into the game when they lose the ball to Nuremberg's strong press in midfield. As soon as Justvan receives it, he cuts in from the left and, although his shot isn't a problem for Kastenmeier, the follow-up from Antiste certainly is. The Frenchman, standing on the left side of the penalty area, only needs to tap the ball over the line from eleven metres out.

No, but almost! Van Brederode has space on the left side and sets up Jóhannesson almost perfectly. But only almost.

Fortuna fighting hard

Düsseldorf have won over 60 percent of the duels so far, with three Fortuna players even boasting a 100 percent success rate: Hoffmann, Oberdorf and Gavory.
16'

Great defending

Heyer looks to receive a low pass from the right and would be in a promising shooting position in front of the goal, but Emreli tracks back and shuts the attack down with a sliding tackle.
13'

Nuremeberg work their way forward

Justvan makes a few metres in midfield, holds onto the ball well, but then has to turn away. The Nürnberg attack continues down the left side, but is ended by Haag's challenge.

Düsseldorf eyeing promotion play-off spot

The battle for third place remains a snail's race: Magdeburg drew yesterday, while Paderborn and Elversberg shared the points today. This gives Fortuna a big opportunity to climb into the promotion play-off spot with a win! Other results have also been promising for Nürnberg; a win would see them go within three points of the promotion play-off position.

Düsseldorf's injury list thins out

Iyoha is back in the squad after a two-week absence, while a fit-again Jastrzembski is back for the first time since October. A look at the Fortuna bench shows that it is no longer filled with players from the U23s; after many weeks with a seemingly endless injury list, Thioune once again has the luxury of choice.

Three changes for FCN

Soares takes over the left side for the suspended Yilmaz (yellow card) and Antiste returns to the starting XI after serving his red card suspension, replacing the injured Jens Castrop. Additionally, captain Robin Knoche has recovered after missing the last three matches. However, Gruber has been so impressive as his replacement that he remains in the starting XI, and instead Karafiát makes way for Knoche.

Thioune makes two changes

Daniel Thioune can rely on van Brederode again after a two-match red card suspension, with the speedy winger coming in for Appelkamp. Also new to the starting lineup is Giovanni Haag, who starts for the first time since Matchday 24, replacing Danny Schmidt in the starting XI.

Nuremberg's starting XI

Reichert - Drexler, Gruber, Knoche - Janisch, Jander, Lubach, Danilo - Justvan, Antiste - Emreli

Düsseldorf's starting XI

Kastenmeier - Oberdorf, Hoffmann, Siebert - Heyer, Zimmermann, Haag, Gavory - Jóhannesson, van Brederode - Kownacki

Miroslav Klose's thoughts on facing Düsseldorf

"Düsseldorf are an established second division team and they have a good mix in their squad. We want to build many facets and be versatile. I demand that we remain unpredictable for the opposing team. For this, we need a lot of movement in our game."

Daniel Thioune's thoughts on facing Nuremberg

"I once said that I want to stay up there until the end when there's something at stake. We will still be there regardless of the result of this match. We currently define ourselves through a lot of mentality. We have to prepare for a variable game from Nuremberg. This means that we also need to show a certain variability in our approach."

Happy memories

In the 1936 German championship and 1962 DFB Cup, Nuremberg won finals against Düsseldorf 2-1 - after extra time in both cases.

Nuremberg strong in Düsseldorf

Der Club have won four of their last six Bundesliga 2 matches in Düsseldorf without conceding a goal. What's more, Fortuna have suffered more home defeats against Nuremberg in Bundesliga 2 than against any other team (five in 10 matches).

Unfortunate

Julian Justvan didn't have the best of days in the reverse fixture. Firstly, he failed to convert a penalty against Florian Kastenmeier, then he scored an own goal in the 90th minute - an equaliser that meant the game ended 2-2.

Goal-hungry Fortuna

Düsseldorf have collected seven points in their last three matches against Nuremberg, scoring 10 goals in the process (2-2, 3-1, 5-0).
