The Kiezkicker responded with a rapid breakaway, with Hartel and Burgstaller combining in the HSV box. The eventual cut-back into the six-yard box found a Hamburg shirt first, though.

Those aforementioned cup wins mean Pauli and Hamburg are unbeaten in three competitive matches so far this season. The Kiezkicker recorded a 3-0 home win over Holstein Kiel and goalless draw at Erzgebirge Aue in their first two league games. Hamburg beat Schalke and drew with Dynamo Dresden. If we have a winner today, they'll be going top overnight.

Former Bayern Munich youngster Manuel Winztheimer drops to the bench. As for St. Pauli, Nikola Vasilj returns in goal after being rested in the 3-2 cup win at Magdeburg. DIFFERENT WORLDS
So what makes St. Pauli and HSV so different? Pauli are an alternative club. Skull and crossbones adorn their flags, and their home kit is all-brown. They're also known for their anti-racist, anti-fascist and anti-homophobic principles - and have only seven seasons of Bundesliga football behind them. Until three years ago, city rivals Hamburg were the German top flight's only ever-present founding member. What's more, the Dinos have won the Bundesliga three times, and even lifted the 1982/83 European Cup.
ALMOST 100-YEARS-OLD
Last season produced a 2-2 draw and a 1-0 Pauli home win that has definitely seen the tide around Europe’s third largest port change. The Kiezkicker have now lost only one of the last eight meetings, with that 2-2 tie the only time HSV have scored a derby goal at home since December 2001. Die Rothosen still lead the head-to-head record by some considerable margin, but there is now an on- and off-field edge to a city derby first played out way back on 19 October 1924.
